EverNightX: If you play a game on Linux using Wine is there anyway to get the achievements with GOG?
avatar
Themken: If you run your game through Galaxy, which they say works on Wine now.
Unfortunately Galaxy does not seem to currently work on WINE out of the box. I was able to get it to run by installing it thru Lutris though. Now the question is if I can get it to also install a game and have achievement work.

And game installs thru galaxy seem to fail at the end :(

Tried playing Umineko (questions arc) and now it started periodically getting a sharp static noise.

I'm in KDE Wayland session with Pipewire. Setting SDL audio driver to alsa, pulseadio or pipewire didn't help it.

Any ideas?

If you run Umineko from the terminal, upon hearing the static noise, does anything appear in the terminal's log?

Nope, nothing that correlates with those noises. Here is the output that happens right after it starts (noises don't occur right away):

juanpaulo1254: Why are slot machines addictive?
You sure you did pick the correct forum thread for this?

Anyway, they are programmed similar way how regular games, and the psychology behind them is quite advanced, but I'm not sure what specifically interests you, I don't think current science can even fully answer why they are addictive (like if you would want to go down to the molecule level and which chemicals and cells in brain are involved), but generally speaking that's how average human brain is wired, the dopamine/adrenaline from risk/reward makes it feel like you are doing something exciting and productive, while you are just losing money. Probably based on the excitement of hunting back in the human predecessors.

The slot machines game design is carefully crafted and timed to trigger most of this subconscious behaviour, so for example the "winning animations" can't be skipped, even if that may seem like great idea for the rational part of brain, but they are timed the way that when you stand in front of slot machine, and you are losing your money, the bigger portion of time is "winning" to make you feel good, etc... There're several similar subtle tricks in design of these games, but I would have to write much longer answer to list them all, plus I don't want to give all that away for free (I'm ex-developer of slot machines BTW).

Just stay away from gambling (also the recent development in computer games introducing loot boxes micro transactions is IMO criminal and should have been fight against by legal authorities much more aggressively, the gambling is enough damaging for adults, and most of the kids have no idea what did hit them and how manipulated they are. With big corps like EA having enough funding to fine tune these things beyond human designer capabilities using AI and massive statistics you must be very resistant to not fall for it in some form, and if you are victim of these practices, it may be complicated to ask for help and to get effective help, so this is not as funny topic as it may look (although I don't mind existence of casinos, honestly, adults have all kind of weird ways how to ruin their lives, so just forbidding them is not an answer).

yeah, I know, but it's sometimes easier to stop my brain by just dumping the stuff/doing it, than trying to persuade it to not think about it at all.

I hope it will be useful/amusing at least for some random reader. :)

I’m on PopOS and I can’t get Galaxy to work.

Can Wine connect to the internet using other programs, or even a ping command, if there is such a thing in Wine? And if you try to launch Galaxy with Wine from the terminal, does it output any notable or even suspicious errors?

Sorry cannot help more as I never tried getting Galaxy to work on Linux. Dual booting is one solution but it can be annoying and takes up a lot of space.
Just tried running Skyrim in Wine, installing it with lgogdownloader galaxy method.

How can I configure graphics settings in it? Starting their SkyrimSELauncher.exe shows no options in the menu, only start and support.

Starting SkyrimSE.exe directly doesn't have anything to configure either.

Does their launcher need some special parameters to give access to configurator?

Just now I did a fresh install in fresh prefix with plain wine. Added dxvk (latest release). Ran the launcher. I see options in the launcher.

Didn't try running the game yet.

EDIT: Game started. Some audio issues, speech doesn't play and I suppose there's supposed to be music too, perhaps in the main menu? Idk, never played Skyrim. I saw a note of this somewhere, probably a simple matter of installing something with winetricks.

EDIT: winetricks xact fixed music and speech. How do I exit the game without switching to a terminal and killing wine?! Ok, didn't realize quit is hidden in the system menu.. need to scroll down.

EDIT: played for a few hours with no issues.

Yes, when running the installer I see options too. I didn't have them when using lgogdownloader method. So it must rely on something else during installation.

I had no issues with audio, everything works fine (you need faudio though make sure you have it installed).

Now I can't figure out how to uncap 60 fps limit. Tried using script extender and Havok fix:

But it seems like it's not picking it up.

Skyrim Anniversary ( GOG Version ) can't load/read any mods installed manually in Linux via proton 7.04 . In windows, same mods, loads correctly.
