Not really unnecessary, in fact VERY necessary, the Activision retro level of Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I think we may be running out of ideas as I just listed an actual essential part to finishing the game. :P
"Extra Toggles" in Lego Star Wars. Useless characters (like Gonk Droids) that are all really awesome

JudasIscariot: Hacking the Swinekeeper game, hell, Swinekeeper itself in System Shock 2. Seriously, try hacking the mini-game thing :D.

Also, try shooting a basketball through the basketball hoop :D.
Ahh, yes. I love the included minigames in both System Shock 1 and 2. Nothing like catching your breath in a safe room by playing some Minesweeper with pigs.

stantonyofpadua: There are quite a few in the Ultima series but the space ship in Ultima 7 was hilarious.
^This.

Two other nice connected useless things are of course the chainsaw in Maniac Mansion and the chainsaw-fuel on Mars in Zac McKracken :-)
The various classic literature stuff you can spawn in Scribblenauts
Random encounters and popcultural references in the Fallout games.

No love for Overworld Zero ? Come on, that's the best GamePIG has to offer!:D

I am playing through Dishonoured - there is a surprisingly high amount of hidden stuff and places in there for people who select different routes. The amount of books and lore everywhere is great.

And Fallout 3, there is so much in there which is not needed but up to the player to discover. For example the bunker with the skeletons of the child and the mother, which you can find by following some clues in a diary. There is nothing else there then the tragic story...
Definitely the chapel in SS2 :D
How about in Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games the insults you could send to each other in serial connection lay? That was hilarious and pretty unnecessary. But awesome! Great voice actors. Like:
"Consider this a warning, Mikes on your case, and I aint sleeping, till you're dead!" And then you knew wtf is up, your friend only had Mike and a bunch of shitty mercs.
Or Ivans: "Toie mama dansevala nastelach voijece!" Which is probably some insult about mamas and dancing, but I dont speak russian.
I mean how many people even hooked up two computers over a modem or serial cable and heard those things, totally unnecessary!
Riding on a Scotsman's back while he steers a tricycle so you can gun down a mime on a unicycle...

trying to catch the opera singer in a puddle so you can electrocute her...

Fighting ninjas while the trailer is in the air in the middle of a tornado...

We REALLY need NOLF games here!

It pales next to having a sword fight inside of a house that is inside of a tornado.
Pandora's box in panzer dragoon2.
I think I really have to play Metro 2033 at some point.
This is not related to games but the really long C4 montage in "the expendables"(movie) is one
