Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines is the game that got me interested again in gaming last year, and it's tied for my favorite game of all time. It has everything I want in a game, fun generally well thought out gameplay, choice and consequence that added to unique playthroughs and encouraged multiple playthroughs,, an excellent story (even if it can be a little heavy handed and transparent about one or two characters), wonderful dialogue, well fleshed out characters (whether main characters or not), and of course great mood, setting, atmosphere and all of that.

With that little love letter out of the way, I can't find any games similar to it, besides the often recommended Deus Ex (which I own but haven't played yet). Am I really already out of luck finding any other games similar to Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines?

Alpha Protocol, The Witcher 1+2. Fallout 1+2+New Vegas, Neverwinter Nights 1+2, Baldur's Gate 1+2, Deus Ex 1+2 ( Human Revolution can't offer much in the choices and consequences zone, sorry ), Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic 1+2, Jade Empire. There are more, but those are coming in my mind right now. Also AP, The Witcher and Fallout series have probably the best choices and consequences system. The kind that you won't see in an instant the consequences of your actions, but somewhere later in the game.

The truth is there are no games like that really, deus ex like you said but it is different in many ways.
Games that might be similar but not really:

*Pathologic
*E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy (this one is really a weird game)
*System shock 2

Planescape: Torment ticks most of those boxes.

Alpha Protocl is great, you should take a look at GMG has they usually have some weirdly low prices on that game along with a seemingly always available 20% off coupon. You get a Steam key though so if you don't like DRM it's available at GamersGate (I own it there) and they give you a DRM-strip update that effectively works like a legitmate crack.

I would also recommend Pathologic because of its atmosphere and weirdness but do not expect to have as much fun as something like Vampire TMB and it also has a poor (but charming) translation.

I can't recommend anything which hasn't already been listed, I would have said Deus Ex as being the closest thing I've played but you already own it, and ignoring the gameplay elements but going with what you mentioned about the atmosphere and writing I would have said Planescape: Torment which has also been said.

You say it's tied for your favourite game of all time - may I ask what it's tied with? the answer may help people work out recommendations.

I don't know any game exactly like Bloodlines, with the exact same mixture of components. So if you want to find the games that come closest to it, that entirely depends on your focus. The answers will be different depending on whether you're looking for e.g. games with vampires, games with a similar stat system, games with a similar perspective, games with similar stealth, gun or melee gameplay, games with meaningful choices, games with similar depth of story etc.

Since you stressed the story-telling and choices part, apart from the games that have already been mentioned, you could also look into the Mass Effect series (more linear) and Skyrim (more open).

Thanks again for the suggestions, shame that there are so few (less than ten it seems) games similar to Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, but at the same time it does show just how unique it is.

My other favorite game is Skullmonkeys. Yeah...it and Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines....are not exactly similar haha.

No, not really. I haven't played very far but I didn't notice any technical issues. I also used the widescreen update that along with added resolution support adds a couple of high resolution textures.

Is Bloodnet similar to Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines? Either in story, atmosphere, anything? Beside the fact that both have vampires...

Yeah, a little. Its an adventure / RPG hybrid. There's some very cool characters in there - e.g. an elite hacker who's body has been killed while he was logged in to cyberspace, and who you have to find a body for if you want to recruit him - and from what I remember a decent story. There was definitely character customisation but I can't remember how much of an impact it had on how you progressed through the game, I think it was fairly linear.

Well worth a look.
