Quite the thread :) Good nostalgia! I finally read it all, and watched as, one by one, almost every single game I had written down was mentioned by other people. Even MindRover!! I thought the wonderful Moonbase Commander was going to stay unlisted, but that popped up in the last few pages. Other semi-surprises were Azrael's Tear, The Last Express, Project Eden, Archimedean Dynasty, and Trespasser. The latter is extremely famous of course, but usually for being a tremendous failure... it's actually a wonderful game behind all the interface issues, and it thoroughly deserves to be here and experienced by more people. Trespasser also has an amazingly dedicated
community who have worked wonders with the game without source code.
I'll get my few previously unlisted games out of the way first:
Nosferatu: The Wrath of Malachi A unique FPS with a horror theme (of the "boo!" variety) and semi-randomised architecture (a most unusual feature for a first-person game). It has many flaws, and the randomised gameplay is eventually rather same-ish, but it absolutely drips with gothic atmosphere, and I'm really quite fond of it.
Forsaken Something of a Descent clone. I was actually surprised not to see this listed, as people usually seem to speak fondly of it, even if it never had the following of Descent itself. I never actually played this one.
Sinistar Unleashed Very much under-appreciated, I think. This is (aside from occasional objective-based bonus levels) a faithful 3D reinvention of the classic 2D arcade game, and it is
AWESOME. I agree 100% with the avault review, and have said elsewhere that this is "Quite probably the best 3D remake of a classic arcade game, ever." Every negative review I saw of the game seemed to dislike the fact that it was precisely what it was intended to be -- non-stop plot-free action, just like the 2D original. And it's
still a good-looking game, almost 10 years later.
Project Nomads This is a slightly odd one, which I hesitate a little to include, but it's also quite unique, and well made. Based around a bizarre 'flying island' scenario, this is a 3D action game which mixes some light base-building strategy, with turret control, and arcade jet-pack antics. Not without its flaws, but very memorable.
Pro Pinball series I rate Timeshock as the single greatest PC pinball game I've played. I would love to have Big Race USA as well. I know that the final one was a bit of a dud, and I don't think they had quite gotten into their stride with first one, but I would say that the first three are worthy (or preferably a single pack of all four tables :)
Addiction Pinball This two-table game is from Team 17, and the Worms table especially is great fun... great pinball action backed by a Worm-y soundtrack and samples... what's not to love? :)
Powerslide Before embarking upon a seemingly-endless stream of realistic Dirt Track Racing games, Ratbag burst onto the scene with this absolute blinder of an arcade racer, set in the future where there was apparently very little friction indeed :) The tracks in this game are just wonderful.
Hidden & Dangerous 2 + expansion
Brutal WW2 tactical team-based infiltration and combat. The original game (H&D Deluxe is free these days) was famed for its co-op play especially. And its bugs, but the Deluxe edition solved a great many of those. H&D2 only has co-op play in its expansion pack missions "Sabre Squadron", unfortunately. You can play this game in first-person, third-person, or from an overhead tactical view. Tough as nails, but there's nothing quite like it.
British Open Championship Golf
Because no Looking Glass game deserves to be left out of this thread -- and it's highly playable, of course, with many unique features at the time it came out.
I ought to note that my list comes mostly from me looking at my own collection, and figuring out which games I thought deserved to be here more than the others, so this isn't my personal wish-list of things I would buy, but rather my wish list for things that other people could have the opportunity to buy. The
underlined games (I want italics, GOG! Underlined text looks too much like hyperlinks...) are the ones I don't own :) (and there really ought to be more of those, but just doing this much has been slightly time-consuming!)
Games in
bold are the ones I want to see here even more than the others :)

I struggled a bit with listing proper sims, because I think that more than any other genre, simulations don't age very well in the face of more modern competition. If there's a more recent sim that covers sufficiently similar ground with better physics, presentation, and A.I., then there's often little point in playing the older one, even if it was a classic, because those features
are the game to such a large extent when discussing sims. Campaign systems, overall historical immersion, or general uniqueness can overcome this, so I found a few that were definitely worth mentioning (most of which have community support ranging from 'solid' to 'astonishing'), and I'm sure there are plenty of others that I'm not familiar with which would also qualify.
