VVVVVV - Make and play edition

A version of VVVVVV consisting entirely of user made levels.

Terry Cavanagh wrote:
Let’s start with what I consider the really important thing – inspired by things like Knytt Stories and DROD: Architect’s Edition, I’m releasing a special build of VVVVVV on Windows, Mac and Linux today. It’s called VVVVVV: Make and Play Edition, and it’s completely free. This version of the game only includes the player levels and the level editor – which means that, from now on, the tools to make and play VVVVVV player levels are completely free. People have done some really incredible things with the VVVVVV editor. I want to share that work as far and wide as I can!
Platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac

Knytt Stories

A free version of Knytt consisting of the downloadable sets of levels each being the separate adventure

Nifflas wrote
In Knytt Stories, each level is its own little adventure. One level is included with the game, where you have to stop a machine that draws the life out of the planet. Don't forget to download the expansion packs for additional stories. Knytt Stories is a 2D platform game that runs on Windows 2000 and later, as well as DS homebrew.
Platforms: Windows, DS hombrew

DROD: Architects' Edition

An open source DROD version officialy released by Caravel Games in 2003.
Grab your sword and start chopping your way to the bottom of a vast dungeon! Learning how to play is simple--you move Beethro in one of eight directions or rotate his sword clockwise or counter-clockwise. Examine a detailed overhead view of an underground room and plan Beethro's movements with care, always keeping his sword between him and the critters. You can wait as long as you like before moving. Logical problem-solving is paramount, but the game still has a sense of action as you lay waste to hordes of nasties.
Platforms: Windows and Linux are officialy supported. The source is based on SDL 1.2 so it might be portable to other Unices and Mac. Linux binary is really old so you might want to use CVS version or search package repositories for your distribution instead.

Grab them by the Eyes

One more from Terry. I like his games: they are simple but coherent and fun. It shows that games don't have to be overcomplicated to really work. This idea is pretty simple, although Terry spent several weeks on it. It's about attracting customers to your burger joint by buying different neon signs. You compete with the team of hipsters holding the neighboring burger selling stand.

A game inspired by a trip to New York last year! This took a lot longer than planned, and over the last couple of weeks I’ve had some extremely helpful feedback from lots of people...
Platforms: Windows, Linux, Mac. Also playable online.

Paper Wings

Paper Wings is an action arcade game that lets you soar to the highest of heights, as the tiniest of things! Take control of Mav, Puck, Chu, and Amei as these representatives of a race of minuscule people achieve their dream of flight through paper aircraft. Control your pilot and run across the aircraft, using body mass to change the direction of the plane and thus control the flight path. Explore the mystical world they live in while racing through for a fastest time in Course Attack, or mellow out and free-roam, exploring the environment and discovering all the hidden secrets placed in the open-world environment. The sky is yours, come fly with us!

This game requires the use of X-Box controllers.
Sage Fusion

Set in a futuristic universe in which artificial intelligence is considered religious taboo, Sage Fusion tells the adventure of a businessman and his bodyguard who visit the planet of Capistad, the capital of the galaxy where two major political powers are centered: the liberal government and the fanatical church. What the two men don't know is that they're about to be caught up in a conflict between these two powers.

Sage Fusion is a hybrid between Role-Playing Game (RPG), adventure game, and visual novel. It is different from most RPGs in that it does away with level progression and equipment customization, instead focusing mainly on storytelling and exploration.

This game is the first in a two-episode series.

Contours of a Dream is a short first person atmospheric experience.
Robotland

TLDR: nice pixel art graphics, crappy controls

A small action platformer by a guy who is very handy with pixel graphics (checkout his DA page). It's made in GameMaker 8.1 and it's still in the development/unfinished, but the graphics are nice. Controls are unintuitive (what is with indie games and controls?). You use wsad to move your guy (w = jump, s = crouch), e to shoot, q to throw bombs, and space and enter like start/choose an item in the menu.

Action/platforms game that is a tribute to the classics of the 80s and early 90s, created with Game Maker 8.1.

You can reconfigure the keyboard at Main Menu> Control or connect a controller.
Also downloadable from here.

HACX 1.2

Hacx was originally released - as an add-on for Doom II - by Banjo Software as a commercial release in the late 90's. It later become a free downloadable product. Since Banjo was trying to rush the game out to the market prior to the release of Quake, it was released as a faulty and rather ill-refined game - some of the maps are rather amateurish and incomplete, a whole lot of texture bugs, etc. Banjo and crew were able to fix many of the texture bugs and released version 1.1, which had its own set of problems. Despite the problems of the original releases, Hacx remains quite popular within the Doom community today - over 10 years later.

Paradise Cracked and COPS 2170: The Power of Law, russian cyberpunk-themed tactical RPGs are now given free by their author Vitaly Shutov. Russian versions only, but anyway.

...And it's strange but I didn't found any mention of The Ur-Quan Masters, the free cross-platform version of Star Control II, here.

The game was free yesterday but it was probably only "on sale" for free for a limited time, i didn't check that.
Red Eclipse. It is not just free, but even opensource. I have more fun with that game than with UT2004. Unlimited ammo, time to reload, special impulse moves, multiplayer, low requirements, built-in map editor with GUI. Some sort of fun game.
