The revenue-sharing part was the most interesting bit to me: Epic's cut for all games sold through their store is going to be 12%, with the rest going to the developer & publisher.

Sounds great for the devs! The question is going to be whether or not theres any exclusivity on that, cause if games can ONLY be released on it then the devs would have to weigh potential greater exposure on steam/gog/humble against better revenue options on epic

The situation of gog was already being complicated seeing its economic results. Now it's going to be more difficult. Sadly with the entrance of stores like epic I do not think gog has a long-term future. Luckily all the games are not drm and sure that cd project enables an offline mode for the galaxy where we can check game time or other statistics.

The industry has always wanted to kill the no drm, and I do not doubt that sadly it will happen.

And I can imagine they will be pushing or incentivising it through Unreal Engine, let's face it if Epic can get all the developers using their engine to sell on their store (or even make it a term of using it) that's quite a few games.

I have no real issues with Epic, they've done some pretty nice stuff for developers (like releasing assets from failed multiplayer games for free to developers) so I'd certainly be interested to see where this goes.

I pretty much ignore them all too. My preference is to have a single library but I do have some stuff spread out a bit as it is unavoidable in some cases.

I do think that Epic, owing to the fact that they are part of tencent which has large equity stakes in almost everything related to gaming now, and the amount of money they have that them putting out a storefront to distribute games is an interesting thing for the distribution market.

No interest here. Happy with getting 90% of my games on gog and i will just stick to steam for rest (which is not many games these days)

They won't, they would not know what a good game is if it hit them in their face.

I probably won't be using them as they are currently owned by Chinese company Tencent (40% stake).

Anyone here who reads the news should know that China has become increasingly belligerent against the West over the last few years. Who knows if they're making inroads into the Western video game industry for nefarious purposes?

China is exceptionally notorious for including hidden malware and backdoors into products destined for the West (and particularly the USA). Most recently, the U.S. government recommended blocking Chinese brands Huawei and ZTE on national security grounds, and a new bill implementing such a block is pending (source: https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/14/17011246/huawei-phones-safe-us-intelligence-chief-fears).

In 2015, there was a scandal regarding Superfish adware-malware bundled with computers from Chinese "premium" brand Lenovo

Recently, there was also this news warning that China could have covertly slipped spy chips onto numerous computer motherboards distributed globally:

With such a small cut for the shop, the question arises: Where did they locate customer support? Other things to do to keep the costs down would be to limit downloads, hopefully not to eg 2 total during 12 months after purchase. Fixing games and quality control must be left to the devs for sure and games are sold as is.

I think competition is good for the customer. It forces companies to innovate and offer a better service.

What I don't like is exclusivity. It"s not clear in the articlr if Epic's games will be exclusive to this new platform or not (only that they already use the launcher).

Depending on whether there's truly DRM or not, I will consider using it or just leave it be.

Hmm, well fuck. I knew about the ZTE thing and the spy chips in the motherboards, but not about the other things. Not to mention the amount of censorship that China has with video games (take example with what had happened with Rainbow Six: Siege a month ago).

Interesting, but I don't think Steam is dead yet even though they tried to commit suicide with their Greenlight adventure. =D

I do wonder about Epic's stance toward DRM.
Although Epic, like Steam, hasn't made a game for some time now and it smells more like a quick and easy way for them to make revenue.

Please don't encourage him. :P He'll start back in on how our drinking water is being deliberately poisoned by our own government and whatever else his little army of Alex Jones wannabes tells him. XD
