It's interesting that there's no fears over, say, SecuROM in general and the online activation servers shutting down specifically.

Exactly, SecuROM brings out a lot of hate posts, when it came out it did more than Steam does now. Saying the opposite is almost laughable.
The reason Steam gets a lot more of it today is because most games are Steamworks games, pure and simple. I don't like ANY activation system, none what-so-ever. Steam is just the one I bitch about more often lately because it is the one I have to deal with more often lately. Also the fact that everyone seems a-okay with it for some reason is grating.
