Tried to ask this in the first topic, but no one responded.

I'm looking for games that have the atmosphere of the first Diablo.
So basically an ARPG or RPG-ish or even turn based with a heavy dark, creepy and gothic atmosphere.
After the second Diablo everyone went doing their games with big open areas and moved away from just the dungeon design.

Before this one gets derailed Titan Quest is out from the start because it's in the open, it's always sunny, has no blood/gore. It's just too "happy go lucky" :)

Torchlight on the other hand got the dungeon and mechanics right, but went the cartoony way without giving you purpose of what you are doing or fighting.

Only game that I can think of is Grim Dawn, but that is not yet in alpha.

Games I have played (that I can remember at this moment):
Everything Infinity engine based
Diablo 1&2
TOEE
Divine Divinity
Nox
Sacred
Titan Quest
Din's Curse
Dungeons of Dredmore
Torchlight
Throne of Darkness
Played that one too. :(
Also played Darkstone.
Temple of Elemental Evil isn't an Action RPG.

Well he does say

so yeah the topic title is kinda mis-leading given his criteria. But with that clarification TOEE does fit into there
hmmm... does Avencast fit the bill?
Sorry I didn't define it better. I'm really looking for something like Diablo in atmosphere and setting.
If it's isometric and hack and slash great, but it doesn't have to be.

Even the first Quake and games like Heretic and Hexen come to mind.

Thanks, I think I'm sold on this one and it's really cheap.

You can try a game called the broken land.It set in a dark land and you can control a party of 4 adventurers. And its plays like diablo.
Have you tried Arcanum or Kult: Heretic Kingdoms?
Not sure how well Kult fits the doom&gloom atmosphere, but it sure has its dark moments.
And I have to ask, since this is a CD-Project site - The Witcher series?

Also, are adventure games an option? There are some very dark ones, including here on GOG.

Edit: I saw you mentioned Heretic - if a an FPS is an option, take a look at Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

The witcher has the dark themes for sure, certainly the attention to detail in the world design like diablo. A lot of it takes place outdoors though, the adventure is set in and around a city thick with work for a witcher and the over-arching plot deals with politics, so its no dungeon hack.

Definitely worth a try though if gothic horror meets fantasy story, with you as a drug taking, sword slinging mutant is enough incentive.

Was Revenant mentioned yet? Little bit planescape torment meets diablo, but terribly hard to get running on modern windows machines.
I've played Arcanum, both Vampire the masquerade game, the Witcher games and Revenant.

Looking at Kult and Broken Land (the critics really annihilated this one). Is Loki any good?

Thanks on all the input so far!

Neither is Diablo. Calling it an RPG is really not accurate at all. Diablo is barely more RPGish than SMB3.
I would say sacred 2 was an enjoyable game with a good size game world only thing was its a bugger to get to work on windows 7.
Diablo 3. It's coming out pretty soon.
Lamentation Sword
Prince of Qin (or how it was called)

EDIT: Oops, thought the genre was meant. Nevermind then!
