I really hate it when this happens, especially when there's no limited time to give people a chance to buy them. Going to be positive here though, many games have left and came back including the old Fallout games, so hopefully these will too.
As it happens, I just installed Descent 3 a couple of weeks ago, with the intention to play it. I tried it out, seemed great for someone like we who loved Descent 1-2, but for now I am playing Descent Freespace instead.

Maybe after that, it is still installed.

Hmmm. Future_Pilot ain't gonna like this.

:(
Shit. Descent is a classic. Good and old.

I've been wondering if GOG would be nice enough to give advance warning when this happens... and this thread proves that they always can't/won't. I'm especially concerned about the duke nukems. But I'm also wondering if other 3d realms titles are at risk. I'd buy them all, but not now unless I have to. Wallet has gotten thin recently.
Crap, those are really good games, I meant to buy them at some point but I guess new I never will.

Oh, well, at least I still have the original CD of the second game.

Grargar: Long story short. 3D Realms no longer owns the Duke Nukem franchise and it has passed in the hands of Gearbox. The 3D Realms Anthology on Steam will be removed on 31 December and there are speculations that it's being removed because the rights to the Duke Nukem will change hands at that time.
I see. So, I guess it is very likely (though not certain) that every other deal involving those games will have to be removed as well...
Thank you for letting me know!
Sad news. hopefully they will return soon, and won't have the fate of Cryostasis.

So what happened, by the way? Forgive my ignorance, but who owns the Descent franchise now?

There is the possibility that they might remain in 3DRealms' own store. Thanks to some licensing deal from the past, they're also still able to sell the Commander Keen games and Wolfenstein 3D on their website, even though they don't own the rights to those.

Konrad: Due to changing hands and in-flux legal agreements, we just had to remove Descent 1+2 & Descent 3 + Mercenary from our catalog, effective immediately.

We do want to apologize for not being able to give everyone more of a heads-up, and we will be doing our best to bring them back.

there is an ocean of difference between "can't" and "wont"

If you really want to:
Descent 1 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/273570/
Descent 2 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/273580/
Descent 3 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/273590/
Descent Underground - http://store.steampowered.com/app/360950/

so you can play them still, if you really want to.

PalioDeMonte: Is there any legal reason that hinders you from telling us this a few days before it takes effect?
For what it's worth, here is last year's response from former GOG in blue G-Doc in the thread announcing the imminent removal of Blade of Darkness:

Smannesman: Any message is better than no message, although people might have appreciated it if it had been mentioned when the situation began.
I fully agree.

Smannesman: Why is this just a regular post BTW and not a 'blue' one?
That's for Good news!™ only.

Possibly those who are developing Descent: Underground; Descendent Studios.

If so, hopefully they will hop aboard the gOg bandwagon some day.

Not going to play it on Steam for sure.
Sad news for members who wanted to own Descent games and play them. I hope Descent games return to GOG library as soon as possible. A serious warning for people who want Duke Nukem games. Buy DNs because they may have same fate like Descent series.
