orcishgamer: Check the page, it's right there, man. You will need Steam for the beta build access, if you care about that.
You'll need Steam for both beta and final as far as I can see from that page, and yes I do care since I demand the ability to play what I purchase where and when I please, without have to worry about losing access at a company's whim.

If HiddenPath have posted any updates or comments giving anything more definite about DRM-free status please do point them out.

gooberking: I don't think it was easy to get DG outside of Steam so its a good bet they will repeat the past. They tossed a DRM-free version into some bundle a few months back ( which I scored) but I think it was a pretty limited window.
Yup, IndieRoyale April Fool's bundle, which was where I picked it up too. So it's by no means impossible for HiddenPath to offer DRM-free.

AstralWanderer: While I'd agree that the original DG was a good tower defense implementation, I won't be touching this project without confirmation of a DRM-free product. HiddenPath didn't respond to a query from myself and a post on the main KS thread suggests that they may go for a "DRM-free-on-Steam" approach (which would still require you to create a Steam account and download/install their client).

I'd also question why they need $1 million for a sequel given that (a) they have an existing engine and art assets to start from and (b) the art requirements for a tower defense game should be lower due to the lesser number of models (towers/enemies) involved, compared to an RPG or RTS.

gooberking: There is no telling what assets they will seek to reuse, so its hard to gauge how much it would be saving them.

New engine, they have to redo their assets, they'll be redoing the original DG maps in the new engine for us as a bonus, too.

That big info-graphic smack dab in the middle of the page has the words "DRM Free" on it. They are offering DRM free on their listed release platforms, plus Steam, where Steam is supported. Unless you'd like to take a look and argue why that doesn't mean DRM Free, I'm comfortable in saying it'll be DRM free, at least to backers.

Ok, i liked the first Defense Grid. I'm not really into TD games, this was one of the only ones that i enjoyed. But to be honest, i still don't understand why they need to use KS. Defense Grid sold pretty well for an indie, as far as i'm aware. And, c'mon 1 million for a TD game? Really? Even if they make exclusively new assets for their game it's still too much. We all know that TD games are not THAT deep, like an RPG, for example. They don't need as many assets (no need for huge maps, too many voice-overs, for example).

Brian Fargo asked 1 million for Wasteland 2. And that's a fucking RPG. Harebrained Schemes asked even less for a sequel to Shadowrun.

Not to mention that they are getting money from Valve for their role in CS:GO.

Look, honestly i didn't like this KS project. 1 million for a true sequel and 250,000 for a DLC? Oh man, really? TD games are pretty popular nowadays, they aren't even making a niche game, which is one of the main reasons people turn to KS. They're looking like the "Activision of Kickstater" to me.

They address every one of these complaints in their video and many of them in their FAQ.
I don't understand why the developers needs money since their game is on every digital distribution service since years .

Read the thread, watch their video, read their FAQ maybe...?
I really hope they make it to at least the first part of their goal.
Although the pledged amount is climbing very slowly, while the days are running away very quickly.
It looks like they're going to add stuff like the OGRE Kickstarter, you can pick a tier and then increase your pledge by a fixed amount to get some cool stuff for fairly cheap. You'll note that Razer and AMD are helping with this, so you can increase your pledge to get a very cheap vid card or mouse. Obviously these are quality parts.

This is a SAMPLE (NOT FINAL) of what they're thinking about adding:

Ok, so a slightly more complex story might be this:

Add $65 ($85 intl) to add either a poster or an AMD Radeon HD 6770 to any existing tier (while supplies last)
Add $75 ($95 intl) to add a T-shirt, USB stick or Audio button to any existing tier
Add $85 ($105 intl) to add an AMD Radeon HD 6870 to any existing tier (while supplies last)
Add $95 ($125 intl) to add the pair of bound art books to any existing tier
This won't cost them money, as far as I understand it, as AMD has donated these cards (presumably Razer has donated some of their nice mouses too, I just don't know what the plan is with those).

How on earth did they get all that!? Does AMD love Defense Grid as well? :D

Evidently so, their name (and Razer's) is on the Kickstarter project title: " Defense Grid 2
by Hidden Path Entertainment, AMD & Razer".
I am now an official backer of DG2. I'm probably not much help though. I would like to see them reach those sexy cross platform milestones. Looks like they are still trying to sneak up on the first milestone. That 1mil is looking a long way off.
My girlfriend, who has played a total of three games ever (Plants vs. Zombies, Defense Grid, and Puzzle Quest) surprised me by wanting to donate to this, and so she's now on board as an official backer. As she said: "I got more than my money's worth from their first game, so I don't mind letting them know how much I enjoyed it by helping them out to make the next one."

Besides, from what I've read in their FAQ, the lowest tier will get the expansion and defense grid 2... they came out and clarified that since exactly what you were getting for the first tier wasn't very clear from the first description.

She ALMOST went with the tier where the voice actor from defense grid (who is brilliant) will record you an in character outgoing voicemail message, but she ended up deciding against it.

What tier was that? I have to say I might have donated according to the amount of gushing I've been doing but I don't know if I saw that.
