So, Defense Grid is probably my favorite TD game, I own it on XBLA and Steam, love the hell out of it. I'm cheating and posting this Kickstarter in its own thread as Defense Grid is awesome:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hiddenpath/defense-grid-2

10 days left, 250k goal, 180k currently, I think they will make it. Stretch goals are pretty cool, the level editor at 750k is where I hope they get. 1 million would fund every idea they have.

A couple of awesome notes about this KS:
- Watch the first 90 seconds of the video, at least, it's funny and you won't be sorry
- Free copy of Defense Grid when you pledge for Defense Grid 2 (Steam code) this is important for the next point, this free copy Steam key will be issued the moment you pledge, funding does not have to close first.
- The first part of the new story line for Defense Grid 2 will be released as a free expac to Defense Grid, called DG: Containment, yep, we get to start on the new storyline right away, and even if you don't have DG, pledging will get you a copy!

Please read the page, it's actually a pretty complicated KS, if they don't reach 1 million USD what we get isn't the full sequel they've designed. They have a bunch of early bird stuff, so you can get in on a reward tier that's much higher for a lower price, but these are pretty limited and many are gone. They will eventually finish DG2 and award it to backers, but they'll seek other funding sources and it might take longer. In the meantime even if they only hit 250k, we get the story DLC and a free DG key.

I wish it didn't close in 10 days but a bit later, I really hope I'll get money until then. Well I hope I'll at the very least squeeze one or two bucks in.
Does the world really need more tower defense games? They're starting to breed like rabbits!

Defense grid really stands out, tho. It's the most polished TD game I have ever played, with great humor and absolutely fantastic level design.
Defense Grid is one of the only (if not the only) commercial TD games that I actually found enjoyable.

This, DG is one of the more amazing tower defense games ever made, if you haven't played the demo, you should. They put polish, on top of polish, on top of polish, then topped that off with great voice acting and visually interesting models and effects. The scope of DG2 looks just about right and what I was expect from a sequel, rather than DLC or an expac.

Also, I guess since pledgers get codes (already got mine) we can hand them out to DG newbies, when they decide to pledge they can hand theirs out and so on. Thus creating a massive DG2 pledge feedback loop! Ah, I can dream:)
DG is awesome. I wasn't even sure I would like TD games, but got sold the moment I tried the demo on XBOX. Bought it twice now. It is very well regarded for a reason.
i like Defense Grid: Awakening..

but i can't see why this would need a Kickstarter?!?

the first DG sold pretty well, and even more when it hit bundles..

They addressed this in the video, they say:
1) They may have charged too little initially for DG as they didn't actually make that much from the launch window sales.
2) A lot went to paying for DG development.
3) The rest they've saved has already been pumped into this, they've been working on for awhile before the Kickstarter.

This. Hidden Path Entertainment together with Tripwire Interactive are like the poster children of "successful" indies under the Steam banner. If TPI could make the sequel to Red Orchestra I wonder why HPE doesn't have the money to do the same with Defense Grid. Everybody is saying indies are doing ever than ever thanks to Steam, so what happened?

good enough :)

seems i should have watched the vid first then..
While I'd agree that the original DG was a good tower defense implementation, I won't be touching this project without confirmation of a DRM-free product. HiddenPath didn't respond to a query from myself and a post on the main KS thread suggests that they may go for a "DRM-free-on-Steam" approach (which would still require you to create a Steam account and download/install their client).

I'd also question why they need $1 million for a sequel given that (a) they have an existing engine and art assets to start from and (b) the art requirements for a tower defense game should be lower due to the lesser number of models (towers/enemies) involved, compared to an RPG or RTS.

Check the page, it's right there, man. You will need Steam for the beta build access, if you care about that.

There is no telling what assets they will seek to reuse, so its hard to gauge how much it would be saving them.

I don't think it was easy to get DG outside of Steam so its a good bet they will repeat the past. They tossed a DRM-free version into some bundle a few months back ( which I scored) but I think it was a pretty limited window.
For $250,000 you get a map pack.

That's pretty bad value, even by Activision's standards.
