As promised, it's time for another contest. This time it might be hard as we're testing your good old gaming knowledge. We've prepared a crossword puzzle (also attached to this post) where the answers we're looking for concern games you can find in GOG's catalogue. If you think you got all the answers (or as many as you can get) send the list of words from the crossword to users@gog.com until Tuesday, October 12 11:59 p.m. EDT.

From all correct entries we will pick 3 winners:
the winner will receive Strategy First catalogue
1st runner up will receive the games from TopWare catalogue
2nd runner up, thanks to our friends at PC Gamer, will receive a PC Gamer UK subscription.

Ready, set, go!

EDIT: The crossword appeared so difficult that even our testers have made a mistake ;). The answer for 17 down was supposed to be "Keepers", but we made it "Watchers" ;p. We won't take into account the answer for 17 down.
Sorry about that and good luck with the rest!

Berserkr: Why they should reply? Maybe because this crossword puzzle has resulted in ~10 pages of sheer confusion.

LordCinnamon: ...And I think we've actually come up with the correct answer now.
Yeah I said screw it, filled them in with the latest "guesses" and sent it off. Oh well if it's wrong, it's only 1 of many contests.

bazilisek: Or we are all blind.
if i am blind i have unused freebie points - but given that charakter creation was 33 years ago i dont think i am allowed to retroactively use them :(

LordCinnamon: ...it's a contest. It's not supposed to be easy. They're allowed to give us tricky ones, you know. And they stated almost immediately that there was no mistake in 17. And I think we've actually come up with the correct answer now.

bazilisek: While that's true, what this situation seems to call for is a simple statement saying 17/19 will not be considered for the contest. Otherwise they're turning this into a guessing game.

Considering how many people probably submit their answers, I don't realistically think I'll win anything, but the chances should be even. There are several words you could squeeze into 17 (I refuse to believe 19 is anything but the obvious choice, it fits with the rest of it too nicely) to get a decent answer, when the obvious one of "Keepers" clearly won't work.

Or we are all blind.
Well I would be happy with a simple statement, saying that 17 and 19 are fine and there is a solution that fits both. From that point i beleive they should accept all answers that make sense (and fit).

On a sidenote, the Cult of Storms were not fightning the Keepers, nor the aformentioned German game, but rather both, and everyone else, who pissed off Meandor in the past.
Well, as I said before, I think this crossword is not designed properly - all words should be connected together somehow, and it is very weird that two words are separated.

Even if answer for 19 is the obvious one, I still have at least three variants for 17 and all of them could fit inside - too many for good crossword design. How can I choose proper one with no more letters known? Is it supposed to be lucky shot?
So what's the verdict peoples?
Funny, I have answers I am happy for in every slot except #1.
I know someone looked for hints before, but anything even cryptic would be appreciated :)
I think that most of the complaints come from it being a poorly made crossword. 17 and 19 are totally separate from the rest of the puzzle, most fields only have one intersecting field and many of the hints are totally vague (how anyone figured out 15 is beyond me).

17 should by all rights be "Keepers" or "Humans" because that's what every single search for the subject has brought up. One of the first search results I found said this:

"Your journey begins as you choose which faction to fight for: the peace-loving Keepers or the vengeful Cult of Storms."

And another source, apparently copied straight from the player's manual, says that the objective of the Keepers is to "Actively oppose the Cult of Storms," while the Cult of Storms' goal is to "Rid the world of both Humans and Keepers."

Even people who've played the game have no idea what else it could be. The only way the puzzle can be finished at all is by stretching the answer to the absurd. If it really is [translation of german game title], I haven't found a single resource that refers to the group as such. I've looked at dozens of websites and not once has that word been used to describe any faction in the game.

It's not "tricky" when the answer doesn't exist in any single resource.

maybe the cult of storms themselves created that part of the puzzle because they knew it would cause confusion and negative vibrations

and if you aks why they would do something like that
because they (secretly) fight agains the optimism (which is then of course the right answer)

You, Sir, are a true genius. Let's go with that solution.

This should win out of pure creativity and reason.

You know what's the saddest thing about all of this? Even after all the grief 17 has caused, I'm still going to wake up early tomorrow morning to start working on the next contest challenge.

I will second you on that Kentomatic - both that the optimism answer is worthy of a prize, and that I am totally hooked on these puzzles!

You're right, it really is a poorly made crossword. The hint for number 15 actually refers to a single line of dialogue in the second game which isn't even on the gog catalogue. Considering this crossword is supposed to test gog knowledge, it's ridiculous that they chose that for a hint

I agree with your crits. I managed to fill in the crossword, but some of the hints are just way too vague and more intersection with the word would have been nice. Now some of the answers I gave are just guesses, not based on anything concrete.

if you have 5, 10, 12 you shouldnt need any help
but in case that doesnt help: "look at this wonderful world around you" gives away three informations: two are about the world, the third information is actually kind of redundant, but it is the best help to find the answer
I can just see the GOG admins getting together with some popcorn and reading this post every hour and laughing their asses off at the mayhem they've caused. Arg! *shakes fist*

But hey, I can't say I wouldn't do it and be amused by the results ;)
