Civil warfare blues.

Rogue Trooper Redux, the visually remastered cult classic shooter, is coming soon, DRM-free, to GOG.com.

One of the most celebrated cover-based shooters of the past decade just got a new coat of blue paint over its bulging muscles and is ready to enter the fray once more. In this futuristic story, you play as a genetically engineered soldier destined to tip the scales in the civil war that's tearing apart the heavily polluted Nu Earth.

Smannesman: I wonder if there will be some kind of deal for those that already own the original game.
Indeed, also I'm wondering if it will replace, or sit alongside the original here on GOG

edit, Also I was resolute to leave this month with money unspent and just DarkSouls with my best bro and now i see that both river city has been added and rogue trooper (of all things) is getting the ol' floor polish. THAT's FOOD MONEY YOUR MESSING WITH

nightcraw1er.488: Rogue Trooper was a good game, don't really see any need to re-do it, however that seems to be the growing trend. My concern here is that they do a Beamdog. For those who don't know the term, thats where you take a working game, add a widescreen mod to it, remove the original, then charge twice the price for it.
[...]
My concern as well. As a seperate title, fine. But a higher price point should be justified by more than a few graphical improvements.

We can always hope that people learn from mistakes. People are thick but rarely that thick(Beamdog were an extra thick milkshake with extra cream no doubt(also why i havent been able to afford planescape or icewind since their 'graphics mods' on my arse of a salary)). (Also hope no SJW's got hold of the game) :P
I'm a big 2000AD and Rogue Trooper fan but only got round to playing the original game last year. Thoroughly enjoyed it but felt there was room for improvement (just wish I could remember what those were). What I do know is that I was not unhappy with the graphics and so hope that this Redux is more than just a graphical makeover.
Also, I hope this means that another upcoming Rebellion game, Strange Brigade, is making its way to GOG.
That reminds me: I still haven't played the original sitting in my backlog. ;)
This struck me as such a strange choice to remaster, but maybe I missed the impact this game had when originally released in the market; it seemed to get "meh" reception when released on GOG (iirc).

You do recall correctly.

It flew under the radar. And not in the "cult game" sense. In the "this is an OK game, I guess" sense. Not just when it released on GOG, but when it released, period. Some 2000AD Rogue Trooper fans knew about it and bought it, but it's not like 2000AD comics are that big, to begin with, and most of the fans of Dave Gibbons' comic were somewhat disappointed by the game.

I find it to be a good title, personally, but it brought nothing particularly new to the table. The game looks good enough, plays good enough, has a good setting, it's faithful to its source material, but it's just not remarkable, I'd say. It's pretty good, and that's a good thing, people should get it if they like 3rd person "cover" shooters, but there are more interesting ones out there (maybe not on GOG, now that I think of it).

I don't fully understand why they're remaking Rogue Trooper, of all things... Rebellion has way better known games in their catalog that could do with a remake. But maybe that's the point? To release a game not that many people knew about, so it feels like it's a new title?

Wait if this is coming here, why don't we have Sniper Elite V2 yet?

Also I'm not so sure about the visuals in this remake, everything is a bit too clean, rounded and shiny, right now I think I prefer how the original version looks... Hopefully it will stay here when the Redux drops. Still gonna buy Redux when it arrives though.

Maybe Rebellion really enjoyed making this one and, like me, feel it deserved a second chance? I for one found this to be one of the most enjoyable 3rd person shooters I've ever played, with clever combat mechanics, likable characters and a unique setting.

Rogue Trooper is excellent. Coincidentally (because the two games share some very similar gameplay mechanics, which I had not realised beforehand) I played it right after playing "Gears of War"; and I found that where Gears had been pretty uninspiring and dull, Rogue was a lot of fun to play.

The setting is great; story is decent; the banter from the A.I. chips is quite fun (even though I would have liked more of it); graphics are showing their age, but still very nice. Sound is good; voices are pretty good for the most part. I think where it mostly wins, though, is variety. Gears largely seemed to be the same thing over and over (I'm not 100% sure it actually was, but that was the impression I came away with), but Rogue Trooper likes to mix things up more. There's more to do, and you certainly get more weapon types, and better situations to use them in.

Gears of War was uninstalled as soon as I'd finished it. I didn't hate it, but I had no desire to play any more of it.

Rogue Trooper I ended up playing through a second time, very shortly after completing it the first time.
I especially like the absence of preorder. Even though I find the characters goofy looking, the praise in some posts here make me want to try it out.

Smannesman: I wonder if there will be some kind of deal for those that already own the original game.
Yeah I'm hoping for that as well XP
I have the rather unique experience of having read just a bit of the original Rogue Trooper Stories (Five pagers scattered around in 2000 AD reprint mags sold in the USA and some original UK magazines), then played the game, then read in proper order, at least the first set of Rogue Trooper stories. Let me tell you, knowing less about the original makes the game better, then reading them after playing through many of the same scenarios you've already played is really exciting. It feels like you are reading a comic about your own adventures.
I am not that hardcore in terms of gaming, tactics, or skills, so I found this game entertaining, but I can see how some would not find it very challenging. I really liked the story, and the fact that you rarely get into a position where you get stuck for hours in one section makes it fun and replayable.
I'm not sure why the game needs a remaster, though, it doesn't look modern, but it doesn't really look bad. The animations are smooth and the body movements are pretty realistic. The overall look is not really high res, but the figures, environments, and animation are, for instance, way better than Judge Dredd vs Death, another Rebellion game of the same era. I wonder if this remake is a springboard for a remake of Dredd Vs. Death, which has a lot more potential fans because Dredd has had so much more saturation than Rogue Trooper. Anyway, I'd buy either of them just because the originals were such fun games.
You know, what's with all this 'let's remake old stuff' rubbish?

Why can't games/films just be left as they are, why the sudden need to remake them? Seems the industry has run out of ideas and creativity so find it far easier to remake old stuff! Heck, all the necessary assets/story are already available so why try to create something fresh and innovative from scratch? Seems that's far beyond a lot of film and game makers these last few years!

Just saying!

Game development has grown stupidly expensive. Updating a old game a little for a re-release is much cheaper than creating something new from scratch. Its simply a profit deal situation. The industry isn't creatively bankrupt, just having to deal with the harsh realities associated with what the game development industry has become.
