An action fantasy slasher with brutal melee combat and RPG character progression draws near. ELDERBORN from Hyperstrange is coming soon DRM-free on GOG.COM. This indie game will give you a chance to become a merciless slayer in the world full of dangerous beasts. Moreover, it combines a classic heroic story with a modern level of skill-based challenge.

Hi everyone!

GDoc here. I'm the writer on the team who made Elderborn. I'll be happy to answer your questions about the game. A friend is taking some GUI screenshots now, so I can post them here for you (that's a very valid point, by the way! we need to add some to the game page as well before the release).

Dark Messiah was indeed our great inspiration (one of the main ones!) and we did our best to live up to its high standards. I'd say for a team of less than 10 (started off as a team of 2 5 years ago), we did ok, even measuring up to a classic A-tier game made with more manpower and budget. We didn't try to mimic any particular game, by the way, even if the inspirations and homages are apparent. Hopefully you'll get to see that our Elderborn is a game standing on its own. :)

Anyway, nice to be back here! Screenshots coming up soon.

EDIT: Here they are. As you can see the UI is pretty minimalistic (but not as minimalistic as in the gameplay video linked above) :) There are some additional pop-ups and notifications showing up from time to time. The other two screenshots show the skill tree screen and the lore codex.

amok: You know quite a lot. Here is gameplay video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tx6WdgiIjno
This seems to be more up to date. Lots of ranting though, in Polish...

Nagisawa: Could we stop with first person melee, it doesn't work. Most fighting men have a larger field of vision and reaction to stimuli than a 24" screen gives. This artificially limits your reflexes. It's also not very fun.
Stop? It's not that common a genre - especially in a more FP...errrrS as opposed to RPG... and one that can be kinda fun and unique if it's done right (Shadow Warrior 1/2 remake, Breakdown). I agree that it could be a bit *more* taxing in something claiming to be Souls-like but this looks cool enough to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Plus like I said, there really aren't a ton of them so something that switches up gameplay a bit here and there isn't a bad thing in my book!

hmm.... no....

Elder Scrolls
Dead Island
Zeno Clash
The Chronicles of Riddick
Dying Light
Delver
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Severance: Blade of Darkness
Arx Fatalis
etc....

implemented well, it does work

Severance: Blade of Darkness is displayed third person view, excepting when shooting with a bow.
It was an amazing game, anyway :)

Can't believe I forgot this one - just played it a few months ago and it was probably one of the best games I played last year. Just super all around fun.
I feel we need more first person hack and slash games. Most welcomed.

Elderborn looks good. This is the first I have heard of it. I like the vertical level design and exploration. I take it the hud components are optional, similar to the way Prodeus proposes having their hud? I have seen some game play footage with no hud at all.

I am not sold completely on the regenerating health. However, it seems, in this case, the way it is done it adds to the tactical game play. I did not see any health pick ups in the video I saw. Looking forward to trying it out. Any ETA on the release date beyond coming soon. I imagine when it leaves early access on Steam.

Are you going to be offering GOG connect for Steam owners?

We'd love to! We just need to see where GOG is standing on that.
