Johny.: Small update for all of you discussing notifications here (e.g. friend requests, chat), as it was stated previously - our Top Men are working on it. :P Joking aside - it will come sooner rather than later. It will be a feature available for every user, of course.

Aaaand replies making me regret posting in the topic in 3...2... :D

Regarding the original topic - I think it's a better default too (as much as I'd love "anyone" as a default for convenience). Most of the users are not touching their privacy settings, and it was quite easy to scan through userbase to send spam (just look at the brave guys scanning our games database :) ). I'm surprised it didn't happen before.
In the name of all that is holy, will any of you finally tell us WHY IS AN UNMARKED THREAD THE ONLY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CHANGE?

It's by far the worst thing about all the the important changes you have been making recently, and yet even when a blue shows up in one of those thread and reponds to us, this is the one thing that is never adressed, no matter how many people raise the issue.

A SMALL change?

Now you can no longer give away a code to someone or have someone ask you for a code your giving away without making them a friend first?

And how am I too befriend one when I can't even PM them?

Besides, I like being able to talk to a lot of people, but I like my friends list short.

What kind of forum is it where by default you can only talk to Friends? It's a dying forum, that's what!

tinyE: And on a side note, whenever anyone PMs another user, Galaxy will be automatically downloaded to their computer. :P
Thanks for the laughs :-]

tomyam80: Oh man... if ppl hv 2 start paying 2 get rep or extra rep i think this wld really be hilarious as that wld totally defeat the purpose of hving rep n the 1st place. They might as well scrap it all together.
avatar
zeogold: I wasn't talking about paying for rep. I was speaking of two different scenarios:
A) GOG introduces a paywall which forces you to make a purchase of $5 to use the chat/forum, but they make it not only for new users, meaning existing users who've already bought well over $5 now get their chat/forum access revoked until they pay $5*
B) GOG introduces a repwall whereby you need 50 rep to use the forum/chat, except instead of setting it so that your rep value has to equal 50 or higher, they set it so that you need to GAIN 50 rep, so in other words, literally nobody can use it until they get an extra 50 rep, which is now impossible, meaning the whole forum is shut down for everybody*

*Except Galaxy users, that is.
Ah ok, i think if GOG chooses option A (which is a possible move) like Steam does it wld help eliminate @ least some leechers if not spammers cos unlikely these ppl wld pay 2 gain access 2 the forums. Option B is highly unlikely as that means they wld be killing/closing off the forum literally as u said.

I still think it wld be hilarious if we hv 2 pay 4 rep though, 1 way or the other. The fact that TinyE received such a bribe sure wasn't meant as a joke though, lol.

Edit: Now that GOG has go ahead implement chat default as 'friends only' & dun bother 2 set this thread as an announcement i can already foresee a lot of probs with chatting with others via PM especially if they missed this thread. This wld be especially bad 4 u as the host for our Community GA. Well, gd luck contacting them. Haha. :p

Still waiting for an answer. This is amazing. I am at a loss for words. I don't think I've ever seen anyone take the piss out of their customers like that. Keep in mind, I've been asking the same for days now in the thread about the Galaxy-bundled installers. And in this one 4 days ago. It's unbelieveable. No one bothers to even stonewall me with some PR nonsense. I'm not even mad. I'm just fascinated.

Okay, this made me laugh out loud. :D

zeogold: Oh, this is rich.
Y'all remember how I said that GOG is likely to screw this up so badly to the point that the friends-only thing also affects the staff accounts? Well, look alive, boys. That's exactly what happened. Let's see how long it takes them to notice.
You got a problem or a question? Just PM one of the blues...Oh no, wait, that won't work!

It's not my area of responsibility. I can only ask you what would you propose as a mean of communicating it?

I meant MaGog, gog DB you mentioned, but also this scanning guy and e.g. SCPM looking for various ways to get sensitive/secret information about games that we add to database.

Mark the thread as a NEWS or a sticky

Make a news post about it on the main page in the Headlines section
Don't act like any of this is hard to come up with

And it's even easier for the Galaxy installers thing- like I already said fifteen times, just add information about the offline installers to the text about "this installer inculdes Galaxy and it's super great".

I don't know whose "area of responsibility" it is, since it seems to be absolutely no ones. I appreciate that you at least reacted to my post, but don't blame me for adressing you, blame the responsible person for ignoring the issue. This is really basic stuff. Keep your customers informed.

I know I probably by now have a reputation, among the GOG staff and users both, for being the most obnoxious, annoying guy around here, always complaining about everything you guys do etc. but I think every sane person will agree that keeping us informed is essential and not some insane, entitled demand.

elcook: In the coming days we’ll be introducing a small change in GOG chat privacy settings - the default setting for chat conversations will be changed to "friends only”. The change will affect all new users, as well as those who have the chat conversation set to "anyone”. Users who have already switched the setting to "nobody” will keep their choice.

We decided to make this change to improve GOG users experience within the community. We receive more and more reports about unwanted messages, be it spam or scam, as well as some hostile messages from some users. We’re looking into those reports, and take strict actions towards those accounts, but changing the default chat privacy setting should fix the situation for users who would experience the issue before we can react.

The default privacy setting for new accounts will be changed today (Friday, July 7th). On Monday, July 10th, we will start rolling out the change for existing user accounts. This process can last for a couple of days, we will inform you once it's complete.

If you’d like to switch the setting back to "anyone”, after the change will take place, you'll need to go to your account privacy settings (https://www.gog.com/account/settings/privacy) and change the "Allow conversations with” option.
Oh boy. I totally do understamd the default setting to friends only but it puzzles me completely why you are changing the "anyone" setting to "friends only" because those who set theitr settings this way probably don't have a problem to be contacted by everyone. But maybe again GOG is thinking GOG users are just too stupid to set their settings accordingly. They do think users are unable to tick a checkbox to install Galaxy so this might just be the case. Anyway setting my chat the way it was before and how I set it myself. I am not happy that GOG is changing my own privacy settings though. It was by coincidence I stumbled over this thread (4 days later) otherwise I wouldn't have known that the setting has changed at all. Sometiomes I wonder what you guys are thinking? Yuu have problems with spammers and scammers - we all knew that FOR A VERY LONG TIME! Now GOG finally wants to do something about it ... how about simply sending a mail to all users, stating the problem and letting THEM decide if they WANT to change their settings? Why do you guys always think of the worse possible solution first? Everyday a new GOG surprise...

EXACTLY!!!
avatar
zeogold: Oh, bloody-
Seriously, y'all? This is the best solution you can think of? Every time I see GOG make the stupidest possible decision to fix a problem, I tell myself "This is it, it can't get any worse. Nobody could come up with an idea lower than this one." Yet here we are.
Just read your post ... funny how we nearly thought the same.

btw: I usually don' care much about any "friend" settings but now I will HAVE to add all those admins to my friend list (in the hope that they'll still talk to me) just to continue on with the conversation. If you want to chat, add a friend ... again something I don't like about Steam has now arrived on GOG.
