How about the Thief games. Slower pace, superb setting and you can spend ages on each level, absolutely amazing first person stealth games. I always like sneaking up behind guards stealing arrows from their quiver and their purses and then hitting them with the blackjack. The stories are also amazing with each level linking to the next with great cut scenes.

Hitman 2 is also a superb game, far superior to the first game, many different play styles, good level design with multiple paths through. Worth getting if you want something that has a bit of a slower pace.

nijuu: Sorry my bad. I got it from their website http://www.beastboxing.com/
Cool, thanks!

DaCostaBR: The Stanley Parable is free and it's awesome.
Not sure if it would run on my rig. Do I need Half Life 2 to play it? Do you know where I can download a standalone downloader, if there is one? I think on Desura I'd need to log on and install the client first.

Yeah, I know that the Thief games are pretty good, but sadly I don't like sneaking all that much and I hate "one wrong move, reload" type of gameplay (granted, being spotted in Thief does not end your game immediately, but from what I've seen it makes it pretty tough to continue). Not sure about Hitman, the setting is less appealing to me than the Thief series, but maybe the gameplay would suit me better? I'll check out some gameplay footage, thanks!
DOTA 2 and Planetside 2, both on Steam, both are free and provide hundreds of hours of entertainment.

I'm not really into multiplayer and not looking for something with hundreds of hours of entertainment and for free, just some short enjoyable distraction I can spend a couple of bucks on. Preferably indie or oldie, because my system is rather on the low-end side (and it already was in 2007), so I suspect it won't run these games smoothly. But I'm grateful for anyone making a suggestion, thanks! :)

Yeah, I happen to have them all, too. :D Thanks for teh suggestions though!
So far I'm leaning towards Beast Boxing Turbo, although I can see it turning up in one of the next Indie Royale bundles. ;)

Too bad you can't sort Desura's games by price or other more helpful categories than the ones provided, it's quite inconvenient to browse through their catalogue.

Any other suggestions?

Have you considered saving your 3 bucks for another time when you have an "obvious I want this game" and just trying out a F2P game you haven't yet tried?
I would recommend the Breath of Death/Cthulu pack on Steam.

Or check here for a whole lot of free games.

Nah, not really, I thought it was more fun to spend it now. :D Anyway, i's not really about finding a game to waste time on, more a collector's curiosity about trying out new, original and so far maybe overlooked games. It may sound weird, but I'm that type of guy who has more fun sampling the variety of games than sticking with one for a long time, and I'm more likely to spend money on a lot of cheap games than on a single high priced one. And I prefer freeware to F2P and single to multiplayer.

That being said, maybe I will listen to the voice of reason in the end and instead just fill up my PayPal account and then give the money to Ville & Anne from Instant Kingdom, because they surely deserve it and sooner or later I'm going to buy Driftmoon anyway. :)
I know you said you're not really into strategies/sims, but Gangsters: Organized Crime is a tremendous amount of fun for $3 (now). Just saying, in case you change your mind ;-).

Yes, I've considered it, but I fear that it might be too tough for me. I don't really like to be stressed all the time. :)

I've got them all except for Puzzle Dimension (which requires Shader 3.0 and my onboard graphic card is lacking support for that). But I agree these are all good worth for money (or free ;) ) games. I'm just a bit disappointed with Wizorb's performance, it started out great and I completed the first three levels but I've got the feeling that the slightly lagging movement of the bat has become worse in the fourth one and it's no longer fun to play if I don't have full control over the bat.
