Time4Tea: I value your comments, but I don't agree with the negative viewpoint. I think it's difficult to impossible to know what impact the boycott is having on GOG's sales figures or decision-making. Regarding sales, even if there is evidence that sales haven't dipped, the past year and a half have been heavily skewed by COVID and so can't really be considered 'typical'.
avatar
Zrevnur: Much more impact than COVID probably had CP2077 - Cyberpunk distorts the numbers very much. Notable though is that GOG is now (Q1 2021) making losses nonetheless.

All numbers I extracted are in 'thousand PLN' ~= 260 USD.
<snip>
Q1 2021 sales (53 835) are somewhat up over Q1 2020 (48 993) - not surprising due to the reasons mentioned but GOG is making losses now: Before-tax GOG made 2 443 profit in Q1 2020 vs a loss of 2 165 in Q1 2021.

Q1 2021 Sales are down a lot vs Q4 2020 obviously though:
Q1 2021: 53835 (Cyberpunk still high GOG popularity?, Corona)
Q4 2020: 193454 (Cyberpunk start, Xmas, Corona)
Update: Numbers for Q2 2021 are out - unfortunately they are integrated into 'H1 2021':

Q2 2021 does not look good for GOG:

Q2 2021 numbers (sales 52498, 2576 loss) are worse than Q1 2021 (sales 53 835, loss 1 883)
H1 2021 numbers (sales 106 333, 4 459 loss) are worse than H1 2020 (sales 109 794, profit 5 573)

Thanks for posting this update!

Based on this, GOG might want to reevaluate their apparent stance that the 10% or so of hard-core DRM supporters they keep pissing off by allowing DRM to creep onto their store don't really matter.

You are a great statesman, indeed, or a great opportuinist. So wrong vision of things is just two options. Mental damage or external interests. and it is valid for the former post.
What a sad thread - one I hoped I'd never ever read, that no-one would ever EVER have the opportunity to write.

Supporting anti-DRM has been the main reason for my purchases over the years. It's the reason I have held out on buying Quake from here because although it's more expensive than on Steam I'd prefer DRM-Free (and my original CD copy of Quake doesn't get me the enhanced version that Steam would get me or that GOG have promised to supply - one day).

Sad. Just sad. I've gone from "I can trust GOG to supply DRM-free" to "I have to pay attention to all the EULA bs and whatnot on a game-for-game basis just like elsewhere, to search out the possibility of bs DRM before (instead of) purchasing the game".

I'm not boycotting. Not yet. But boy, does this issue have me Steamed!

As for offering freebies only to Galaxy users - WTF? Is my money not as good just because I prefer offline installers? Fnark!

It's my birthday in a few hours. I've been mulling over buying "Human Resource Machine" and "7 Billion Humans", as a fan of World of Goo and (to a lesser extent) whatever the "Little Inferno" game was. Twice the price here as they are on steam, I've been debating whether paying twice the price to support a DRM-Only store is worth it. I'm not sure, but it's not worth it for a "DRM-Only-unless-it-suits-us-otherwise" store. I feel Valve's wallet looking forward to getting infinitesimally fatter.

(30) 19/8/21: Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Imperial Edition Bundle - $13.5
(31) 19/8/21: ADOM (Ancient Domains Of Mystery) - $1.5
(32) 6/9/21: Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth + DLC - $3.5

Total not spent on GOG so far: $166

===========================================================================================

Additionally, after 11 years of buying nothing but GOG, I have finally decided (in May) to begin buying video games elsewhere --- on Humble Store, Indiegala, Steam, Fanatical, Green Man Gaming, etc. --- as long as they're DRM-free and, more importantly, client-free.

Total spent elsewhere in 2021 so far: $80 (61 games)

===========================================================================================

My reasons for boycotting:
(1) GOG does not indicate which games contain single-player elements that require galaxy or an online presence (e.g. Absolver, CP2077), making it impossible to buy client-free games with confidence (I don't care whether or not they sell such games, I just want to know which, so I can avoid them) --- Status: Still waiting for GOG to add some indication of this, e.g. via a search filter or game page field.
(2) A significant number of offline installers are outdated vis-a-vis the galaxy installers, sometimes for months and years --- Status: Since the boycott began this has improved significantly, which seems to indicate that GOG has made an honest attempt to resolve this to some degree, so from my POV, I consider this, for now, to be resolved, assuming it does not deteriorate again.

Maybe another "DRM creep" symptom: In the newest (H1 2021(*)) CDP management report there is a change to the DRM free "core principles" of GOG:
H1 2021(*):

This is evidenced, among others, by striving to ensure that single-player gamers are distributed in the DRM-free model, free of restrictions which might otherwise prevent customers from enjoying their purchases.
2020 ones (**):

As a rule, the company ensures that all of its games are free of cumbersome DRM measures.
So they now restrict their DRM-free to single-player games.
And instead of 'ensure' its now enough to 'strive to ensure'.
(It also says 'gamers' instead of 'games'.)

Note that this is meant for investors and not customers. So unlike random advertisements (or "blue" statements?) on GOG here its subject to financial regulation of at least Poland and USA.

Amusing mis-spelling of gamers/games. This is actually a very serious change, though. That is a messages that goes out, loud and clear, to investors and other developers (especially the big bad boys), and the message is that we're not so serious about this DRM-Free malarky any more. Although only a few words are changed, this is a very big change of principle.

I hope more people are taking backup of your games/installers, because they may not remain DRM Free.

Good advice, but be aware that new installers might break for some games/users, or lack content. And now all of them have been “galaxified”. With no way to get old versions, or even check updates, if you have an old installer, probably worth keeping that!

Zrevnur: Update: Numbers for Q2 2021 are out - unfortunately they are integrated into 'H1 2021':

Q2 2021 does not look good for GOG:

Q2 2021 numbers (sales 52498, 2576 loss) are worse than Q1 2021 (sales 53 835, loss 1 883)
H1 2021 numbers (sales 106 333, 4 459 loss) are worse than H1 2020 (sales 109 794, profit 5 573)
Can you and/or someone else please translate all those numbers into USD?

And are you saying that GOG took a financial loss in Q2 2021?

And what does "sales" mean? Is that the total number of all games that were sold on GOG?

Or is that the sum of the financial dollar amount of what the total number of games were sold for?

Or is it something else?

These kinds of things require much better & much more clearly-explained explanations than have been provided in this thread so far.

As already explained by Zrevnur above: "All numbers I extracted are in 'thousand PLN' ~= 260 USD.".

So multiply each number by 260 to get USD amount.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: And are you saying that GOG took a financial loss in Q2 2021?
Yes. Also in Q1 2021.

avatar
Ancient-Red-Dragon: And what does "sales" mean? Is that the total number of all games that were sold on GOG?
No, it's amount of money in KPLN.

avatar

No, it's amount of money in KPLN. Multiply each number by 260 to get USD amount.
