What free software can I use to open bin files?
7-Zip: http://www.7-zip.org/

They are Rar archives.
BIN files aren't all the same, but a good start to trying to open them is 7-zip.

No, not generally.

Will 7-Zip open the bin files that come with GOG games?

Usually yes, because these BINs are often image files, which 7-zip is able to open.

Which game are you talking about?

EDIT: Just to clarify: Are you talking about BIN files in the game's directory after installation or about the BIN files that come with the installer?

unar is my tool of choice for the RAR .bin.
For the InnoSetup ones, I go with innoextract.
After installing 7zip, right click on bin file and select open with. Then choose 7zip.
Copy the bin file first in case 7zip does unkind things to it

Why would you want to do that?

The games should have their own setup file that will decode the bin file with it...

E.g. to get the files of the original DOS disk, which is often included or an old CD soundtrack.

EDIT: Wait a minute, maybe I'm thinking much to far. If OP is talking about the BIN files that come with the installer there's indeed no need to open them.

I'm trying to install Painkiller. Should I just put all the files in a folder and it'll install it?

As far as I remember, the ones with Bin files are Rar archives while the single exe games are extractable using InnoExtract or InnoUnp.
If those already mentioned fails, I'd suggest Universal Extractor

You don't have to open this BIN file to install the game. Simply put these two files in the same folder:

setup_painkiller_black_2.1.0.9.exe
setup_painkiller_black_2.1.0.9-1.bin

and run setup_painkiller_black_2.1.0.9.exe to start the installation.
