It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all). We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera
the BG games are 2D so the higher the resolution the smaller the graphics on the screen, which makes going beyond 1024x768 pointless.
they'd have to re-do the entire graphics for a HD resolution (probably 1080p), and i don't see that happening from an outfit like Beamdog...
Easiest would be to keep graphics resources the same size and give you a wider view area. That's been the most popular method in other up-res 2D games.
If they have access to original art assets at higher res, it might be as simple as saving the game files at higher resolution, or re-rendering them.
They could up-sample the original 2D graphics and tweak them where needed. You'd get a softer image, but it would be easier to look at than lower resolution pixels.
Or they could recreate everything by hand, like Monkey Island SE. I hope they don't. It's easy to lose the character of the original that way. Repainting everything to the same standard as the original would need a lot of resources.
* Beamdog exclusive (for now) * 2D only * D&D 2nd edition rules * Based on the Throne of Baal version of Infinity Engine (same save format apparently and should be compatible with previous game saves/mods) * Some new content including new voiced characters (perhaps stuff from fan-made mods for BG?) * Split into BG1:EE (BG1+TotSC) and BG2:EE (BG2+ToB) * Improved UI/rendering * Languages other than English (perhaps)
So... sounds like pre-modded BG with some other minor UI enhancements.
WTF??.. The Baldur's Gate I know couldn't fit on anything other than a PC.... to make it compatible with other platforms SIGNIFICANT work to the ui would have to be done.... In which case I certainly don't want some piece of shit UI designed for a gamepad.

Mac/Linux/iOS
Trent specifically said it won't support controllers so no consoles.

he says "no support for controllers" so the other platforms probably aren't current-gen consoles. some Apple handheld, possibly?
i'm still not ecstatic about the announcement. looking forward to the screenshots next week (hopefully) but bracing for massive disappointment all the same...
This just seems pointless to me, because the interface and graphics in BG2 are outstanding, and with mods, you can play the entire saga in the BG2 engine at any resolution, including widescreen.
I can't remember who said it, but to paraphrase someone clever; "adding to something good doesn't necessarily constitute improvement."
And that there is the killer for me. I'm not going to install yet another DD client and have to take care of yet another username/password combination to play Baldur's gate. I'll just use Tutu.
I know for sure I would not like Beamdog to make a Baldur's Gate III. I don't even know Beamdog, other than there is a former employee of Bioware in it.
