If I may make a guess, to OP wants to know if people include ARRR! games in public backlogs like Backloggery or Completionator.
I only count games I have an interest in playing. For example, the Realms of Arkania are game is have in my library, but haven't played. I don't include them in my backlog because they were free from GoG and I don't have an interest in playing them. I wouldn't buy a game or enter for a GA for a game I have no interest in.
For me it is all games. Does not mean I will finish the once I got for free but I will at least give them a try :D

What do you mean "own"? Like the games you've programmed and published yourself, ie. you own the IP rights?

Or if you mean own as in "own", do you mean not including those someone gave you as a present?

Or since some consider DRM as "not owning", was this about DRM-free versus DRM games? So not including most Steam games to the backlog?

For most of the games in my backlog, I can't tell yet if I want to play them or not. Ok, I've made up my mind that I don't even try to play some of the earliest Ultima or Might&Magic games anymore (I'll have to face it, they are just too crude nowadays), but other than that, all the bets are off or whatever would be the most suitable idiom in this case.

Well, I could figure out what the OP meant. : )

Personally, I count all games that I own that I either A.) am interested in playing, or B.) paid money for (or both). So, I count Beneath a Steel Sky and Driftmoon because, even though I got both for free, I want to play both at some point (at least to try them); whereas Teenagent (which was free) and Beyond Divinity (which was not) I do not count as part of my backlog because, while both are in my library, I've little to no interest in playing either.

Another question would be: When do you consider a game as no longer being in your backlog? Only after you've beaten it (assuming it's the kind of game that can be beaten)? After you get sick of it? After the very first time you fire up the game, regardless of how long you actually play?

I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt and assume he means free, not pirated, games and paid games.

I want to play all my games, but I won't loose my time and finish games I don't like.
It bothers me not to finish a book, a pc game, a movie, a job, or anything. So my backlog is anything I have not finished, with priority given to games I haven't played. Very seldom do I start and abandon before the end. When I do, I justify it by saying, "Look at all those titles in my backlog!"
