I want next month to get a good RPG for the DS but I am not a fan of the japanese RPGs with the kids and the endlessly linear worlds and grinding.

I have most of the Final Fantasy games and they are good. It was especially fun to revisit III and you should be able to get it cheap. I also got the Might and Magic Game for Christmas but haven't played it much yet but it seems to be fun.
Golden Sun Dark Dawn.

He asked for non-japanese style RPG's, which pretty much tosses final fantasy out the window. On an unrelated note, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes is a very good game if one likes puzzle combat.
D&D Tactics might be an okay buy if its on DS. Its not very strongly story driven but feels D&D

I believe that is PSP exclusive.

I don't throw FF into the whole JRPG arena - its quite Americanized. Thanks for the recommendation on Clash of Heros.
Etrian odyssey games, the izuna games, and shiren the wanderer for your nethacky dungeon crawls;

orcs and elves was a pretty good first person rpg

Lock's Quest is rpgish with its own twist.

Contact was interesting.

The World Ends With You is very different, it might be worth a look.

Infinite Space is sort of a space travel game, pretty linear, but really cool in it's own way (and definitely not a final fantasy clone, which I think you are wanting to get away from)

The mario rpgs are fun, I guess still pretty japanese :)
The Dark Spire.

Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals which is kind of a remake of the SNES version. I didn't think it was better than the SNES version but I still enjoyed it.

It should be pointed out that this is an action RPG. But yeah, I heard it was good.
Infinite Space and Disgaea are the two RPGs I'd recommend. I'd think you'd hate both of them though.
Can some of you guys before suggesting a jrpg read the original post where it says NO JRPG?
Thanks.

For the rest, thank you.

I noticed a lot of people not paying attention but... can I ask if it's JRPG gameplay you want to avoid, JRPG story/design, or both?

Hehe, welcome to the internet :) I don;t even bother asking questions online anymore specifically because of this.
