serpantino: Stalingrad. It's from the German perspective though but it's a good one.
I would say, that this makes it a great one. It is very german though, no happy end, no glory, no heroics, no cute and handsome people. Just ugly, ugly war.

Didn't Poland made a very good movie about Katyn recently? And has anybody seen "Defiance"? Both are on my watchlist, but haven't gotten around to see them yet.

I linked to a page that links to both parts of the movie on Youtube. You could search YT directly by the title to evade the middlemen.

Actually Mosfilm on YT has an entire section of war movies.

JudasIscariot: If there was no sex back in those days, how did people reproduce? Budding? Splitting like amoebas?
avatar
grviper: No, if memory serves, some oaf in power declared that there was no sex in USSR meaning there was no porn and stuff, but the wording was "no sex". That's in a country where in the industry's "rubber article #1" was the gas mask and "rubber article #2" was the condom.
Something tells that it's still, after all these years and monumental changes, "rubber article #1" and "rubber article #2". I can only guess at which one is used to equip y'all's army :P

Well, guess no more

And then Google for Russian inflatable army

Should I turn on the safe search option??

It won't help if you consider inflatable tanks and jet fighters naughty.

Naughty in a good way? :P

Also:

"I'm proud to be making entire rocket-launchers and tanks for our armed forces," says Lena, who is stitching a surface-to-air missile system.

This kind of statement would not be out of place 50 years ago :P

Titanium: Do the Yugoslav partisans count? 'Cause let me tell you, there be some good movies on that front.
Some awful ones too, but you didn't hear it from me!
Im sorry but these movies are a bit naive ;)

Just google it. It finds tons of videos of Russian privates using pumps to erect stuff for the sake of the Motherland.

I did and, thankfully, nothing eye-bleach worthy jumped out at me :D.

Adzeth: Not exactly what you're looking for, but Winter War and Continuation War took place around that time. Finland vs Russia, and there are some fancy pants movies about 'em.

For example,
Unknown Soldier (the link is to a clip from the remake, the original is in black and white)
The Winter War (haven't actually seen this one, I'm assuming all the scenes are from the movie since the description is lacking)
Rukajärven Tie (haven't seen this one either)

The front is Easternish, though, and they're speaking languages.
Thank you! It WAS The Winter War. The uncut version is very good.

I had forgot about Unknown Soldier. Also a good movie.
If you haven't seen Das Boot, I'd highly recommend that one. Also, you might want to check out Come and See, though it will depress the fuck out of you.
