chadjenofsky: WAIT, WHAT?!? ARE YOU SAYING BIOSHOCK IS SIMILAR TO SYSTEM SHOCK BESIDES JUST IN NAME ALONE?

huh... now I'm a little more interested in Bioshock.

InfraSuperman: To say it's similar to System Shock 2 is an understatement. It's pretty much a reskin of that game, albeit with dumbed down gameplay and a much more forgiving difficulty.

Here's an excerpt from Yahtzee Croshaw's review of BioShock:

"But that's the thing; it isn't like System Shock 2, it is System Shock 2. Oh, sure it looks different and it differs in the fine detailing and the character names are changed and shit, but once you strip all that out and the bad guy might as well be Shodan with a waist coat and a copy of Atlas Shrugged. The Psi Powers are now Plasmids, the Hybrids are now Splicers, and the wrench is now...well a wrench, but it's a different kind of wrench. Everything that was cyberpunk then is steampunk now and sometimes it gets a little bit hard to swallow. I wasn't aware that boiled water could form allegiances."

When I first saw that review, I thought he was being hyperbolic, but once I actually got to play System Shock 2, I realized just how accurate it was. Even the central story twist is the same; and the game utilizes the same baffling "two currencies" system (nanites and cyber-modules in SS2; dollars and ADAM in BS).
Don't play it then. I don't think most people care.

Have I said anywhere that BioShock is crap, or that people shouldn't play it? I was just pointing out all the stuff I noticed about the similarities to its predecessor. I'm not even that much in love with System Shock 2, as the things I previously disliked about BioShock were just as present in SS2. Neither is a bad game, but both are incredibly flawed.

Breja: I have no opinion on the matter, not having played either System Shock myself. I was just pointing out that it is indeed possible to plagiarise oneself.

skeletonbow: Only by redefining the word plagiarism:

:)
Autoplagiarism - the act or process of plagiarizing one’s own work.
Sure sounds like a made up word to me since it redefines the base word to mean something entirely different. It's also not recognized in the Oxford English Dictionary which is considered authoritative in many countries (including Canada). The only thing it'd have going for it is if the term is heavily used and with an understood meaning though as the English language is descriptive rather than prescriptive, a quality that can be seen as good or bad depending on the situation. :)

Makes me cringe though. :)
is that even plagiarism though ?
its the authors own work so they can references it chops it up edit it or rework it as they see fit
even remake the whole thing under a different guise

bioshock is basically a remake of system shock 2

I only know for sure it's a proper word in polish, "autoplagiat", so I just googled to see if it exists in english and found it, so I assumed it works. I might be wrong.

Breja: I think the word you are looking for is "autoplagiarism".
To my understanding that term is used to accuse someone of a lack of originality and does not apply when someone is openly proclaiming that his newer project is a spiritual successor / remake etc. of his earlier work.
