GOG.com: ...
In case anyone missed, GOG brought W10 compatibility for WC 4 some days ago. Thanks, GOG!

How about an easy to implement control scheme for WC3?

I managed to get through WC1 and 2 about 8 or so years ago, but the controls for 3 stopped me from continuing.
I was playing the original Wing Commander before I could form coherent sentences. What a sublime Top Gun experience. WC 1 through 4 still offers one the most comprehensive career modes for a singular character to date, taking us through each stage of Blair's career. From the rookie of WC1 to the veteran of WC2, to the hero of WC3 and the legend of WC4. Happy anniversary!

My only regret is the first game isn't voice acted, because the range of stereotypical accents would've been hilarious. It's the year 2654 and we've got Crocodile Dundee over here. :)

I believe Wing Commander for Sega CD had voice acting. If you are willing to emulate it, you can find it online somewhere.

Wing Commander started my love of Space Simulators. I was ecstatic when SC was first announced... knowing that CR was handling it... I truly hope to see it come to fruition.

GOG.com: Want more? There’s a 13-episode Wing Commander Academy animated series from 1996,
It's nice to see someone remembers it. It was a really damn good show, way, waaaay better than anyone had any right to expect from a cartoon based on video game in the 90s.

For anyone that has not seen it, its streaming on NBC/Universals new streaming service Peacock.

I was picking up my first custom-built PC when I saw a display unit showing the scramble animation from Wing Commander and immediately bought the game to take home with me. I found I needed to have a chip installed in my keyboard and my VGA upgraded to get more than 8 colors. I made the upgrades and experienced the innovations in animation and reactive soundtrack. I've owned and played every WC game since.

I learned of GOG by a friend who mentioned it and said that Wing Commander was available, adjusted to play on modern machines. I made a bee-line to the site and purchased every game again as they became available.

Now I only need Kilrathi Saga so I can turn off the cockpit graphics... And the Legend Gateway games...

Not the Sega CD version, sadly. Super Wing Commander (which had missions from the first game, both expansions, and a few original ones all mashed together) was for Mac and 3DO.

With all the remastered gaming content happening, this is a series I wish could get that treatment.

+1 That would be nice wouldn't it. I still consider it one of my favorite PC game series.

This is the 1st time I'm hearing about it. Now I have to see where I can watch it for free lol, already have way too many paid streaming services.

On YouTube (at least for now). It even stars Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell reprising their roles from the game.

Thanks for the info!

I'm gonna watch it as soon as I log out of here, never know right. :)
Something that always stood out with these games is the losing experience. Losing is not an inconvenience or 'punishment' per say. It's part of the story. If you don't perform in missions, the game sends you down an inevitable losing branch complete with its own tragic conclusion... rather than a 'you died press x to reload your last save'.

We don't see a lot of that anymore in story telling. Games now offer a lot of hand-holding such as automatic saves, checkpoints, regenerating health and other mechanics to try and stave off death/loss to the point where it feels more like a nuisance than a dreadful consequence or proper branch in the narrative.

Outside RPGs with their token good/bad or good/better endings of course... but this is part of what makes gaming so dynamic and replayable.

Did not know there was a movie.
