Hi all,

I have my 8 year old nephew for a bit and would like to set up a few games for him. I previously set up the lego harry potter game - but he's not really into it.

Any recommendations for kids (8 year old boy) games on GOG?

Thanks,
Rob

Humongous Entertainment will keep him entertained if he wants to play a game.

I think LEGO games are great, but kids really need to play with an adult b/c a lot of the puzzles are beyond them. (heck, some are beyond me)
Let me beat the drum for Botanicula. Played it with my boys and they loved it... and so did I.
Guacamelee could be a good one, it is rated T-Teen, but I can't think of any reason why an 8 year old would be ill impressioned by it.

Another fun one: Shovel Knight
Samorost 1 & 2!

And Triple Town, too. But this one gets too hard, sometimes.
New Zealand Story!
IMO he's already old enough to play Heroes of Might and Magic.
Here's some of what I had a blast with when I was 9 years old, restricting myself to games available here :

- The Secret Of Monkey Island
- The Incredible Machine
- Populous 2 (I actually played the first one as a kid, but the second one is better in every regard)
...And I seem to remember having great fun fiddling around with castles designs in Castles, eventhough I can't remember anything else from the game

An 8 yearold... Probably stuff that doesn't have much text... PRobably fairly simple gameplay so no 4X or something like that...

In no particular order after glancing through my library:

Triple Town
PixelJunk Shooters (Some story but it's optional)
PixelJunk Monsters
MagicMaker (should be simple enough)
Terraria
WindForge (Building and exploring is going to be far more interesting than anything else)
Hocus Pocus
Ittle Dew (not sure how much story is there but mostly puzzles)
Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack
HammerWatch (maybe, a little adult in a gauntlet sorta way)
Race the sun
Rayman (any?)
Fez (Text is encoded)
Cannon Fodder (A little adult, blood and war, etc)
Tyrian 2000
Unmechanical
Adventures of Shuggy (Puzzle solving...)
Dust: An Elysian tale (A little adult maybe, brawler and fighting, some story, but good nonetheless)
Giana Sisters (Platformer.. nuff said)
Simcity 2000 (City builder... who cares what the words say? Just build!)
Mr Bree+ (Haven't played)
Whacky Wheels
Blocks that matter

I was thinking the same thing. I buy my son more books than anything else and he's 6 yrs old.

When i was 8 i can't recall taking the time to read any of the game texts of games i played unless it was required to get through stuff. Besides you don't want to add in a huge vocabulary that's confusing.

Do you honestly think i should recommend games like Vox, Ring Runner, or Dark Siege? Or games heavy story or have huge fetch quests like Costume Quest, Jazz Punk, or Geneforge? Sure he can read, but does he really want to? When i was 8 i played Joust on my atari system, not read a book... (At least that's the impression i get when i ask my inner 8-yearold)
Duke Nukem 3D. You're welcome!
My 6 year old daughter enjoyed playing around with Rayman Origins. Also, she toyed with Unepic (which is an adult game but have a kid friendly setting in options) some. The neo-platformer games were to her taste.

She's enjoyed the Humongous Entertainment games (only on Steam) but they frustrate her.

My 6 year old can read but her vocabulary is limited and she struggles to "sound out" long words so text heavy games or rapid words could be annoying to her (despite the potential for her to acquire more language from it).

If not already done, buy him the Hobbit. I got it for Christmas when I was seven years old and it was the most awesome thing ever. I knew entire chapters almost by heart at some point.

When I was eight, I was either reading kids-oriented history books and magazines, or playing the shit out of graphic adventure games.
Me proud reading freak.

What do you mean with "you don't want to add in a huge vocabulary that's confusing" ? Extending your vocabulary rocks. Show him where the dictionary is and you're set.

I think I would have had a blast with Geneforge when I was 8 or 9, but then again I loved and still love drawing maps for my RPGs.
