I wanted to try out how GK3 would look like with high resolution textures. Here's the result of my little test, which you can experience yourself by going in Gabe's bathroom in the hotel.

Installation is simple: unpack the folder in your GK3 folder. The gk3.ini file goes to the root folder where the game exe is located. Start the game and go directly to the bathroom to behold the new textures.

Get the file here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2FLduwn4c1WaUJ3a2g2ZDktOUk
It's been scanned, so it should be clean.

That's sweet. I used to mess with the game's console and try out different things myself. Nice job, I've just tried it out and the bathroom walls look really sharp.
Yeah, the original texture work in GK3 is very low res and in most places pretty ugly as well, so slapping almost any HR texture makes the graphics look more crips, especially if you turn off mip mapping from the settings.

Sadly though with the diffuse maps only thing that you could alter from the textures are the shadow maps. Obviously the engine itself is far too old to support more juicier shaders and textures, but if one would be up to taks to actually re-texture the whole thing, the process would be fairly simple at least, albeit time consuming. (there's actually an old, dead project that tried to re-texture the whole thing).

Of course there always would be the possibility to go nuts by remodeling the whole thing, but I don't even know what app and what format those old 3D files are.

Nice MOD, it looks too beautiful!

BradDaBug made 2 tools for export/import the 3D models: http://gk3tools.sourceforge.net/mod2obj.php
I wish people would mod this game further. It could look relatively nice with high-res textures+running at high resolution.

There was an ambitious MOD project by Nico Sels (http://sidney.fwheel.net/GK3RP/), but unfortunately all the efforts came to nothing. Words of Nico himself at Pinkerton Road Forums:

""Too bad all those textures ended up on a hard drive that I dropped on the floor... fixing the broken hard drive would cost me about 2000 dollars or so.. they have to open it in a dustfree room, reassemble it.; and then they MIGHT be able to restore the data.. so 'nough said, unless I strike it rich.. I'm afraid all that data is lost..""

It's a crying shame! It looked too wonderful ...

I've seen your MOD in-game and it looks very nice. Congratulations!
Besides the bathroom, it also replaces other textures at Gabriel/Grace's room: the ceiling and the door of the dumpwaiter.
There's a texture mispelled: DWBACK.bmp should be DWDBACK.bmp

I've made a little MOD with 'fan art', and right now I'm working on a new MOD project around Hi-Res Paintings with author, title and year.

Could I mix together your bathroom-MOD and my paintings-MOD? I ask permission and, if you give me it, I'll credit you (and link to this thread) when I publish the MOD.

By all means. I'm glad if something juicier comes from my little test.

Thank you very much.
MOD: Hi-Res Bathrooms & Paintings (1st version)

This 1st version includes:

- New Hi-Res textures for all the surfaces of all the bathrooms, plus the ceiling at the Room 25 and the doors of the dumpwaiters. Thanks a lot to you, Tomint, again for these textures.

- New Hi-Res paintings of the whole ground-floor of the hotel and the Room 25 (Grabriel & Grace's room). Each painting also includes the author, title and year of the works of art. Thanks a lot to Bonny Ploeg for the information about the paintings.

If you want to play the MOD in-game, download the .ZIP file from Google-Drive, extract the files to the GK3 folder and run the game. There's no need to make a security-copy because the MOD doesn't replace anything, it's only an add-in.

In this folder there are several screenshots with the original textures (* Normal.jpg) and others with the new Hi-Res textures (* Hi-Res.jpg).

SignoreBuchelli:
Those look really good.
Thank you. The ceiling of the Room 25 deserves a second sight (original and new texture by tomint).

The paintings are a great improvement, I think the text is unnecessary, though.
MOD: Hi-Res Bathrooms & Paintings (2nd version)

Added the paintings of the kitchen and the rooms 21 (Buchelli), 23 (Wilkes), 27 (Emilio) & 33 (Mosely).

Zip file at Google-Drive: Install like the previous version.

Comparison screenshots in this folder.

The texts (author, title and year) are a homage to the people who identified them, mainly to Bonny Ploeg from Nederlands. Without their work, this MOD would be impossible.

I'm working on Hi-Res paintings for GK3 (previous posts), but there are 5 unidentified images. See the attached image.

The Lady-Harp is an emblem of the Irish people and it is labeled as tapestry in the game.

The sword must be a famous/hitorical one, because the hilt is too peculiar and has an inscription on the blade.

Does anybody know anything about them?

MOD: Hi-Res Bathrooms & Paintings (3rd version)

Added the paintings of the hallway and the rooms 29 (Madeleine) & 31 (Howard and Estelle).

Zip file at Google-Drive: Install like the previous versions.

Comparison screenshots in this folder.
