Greetings!
I already have some sound-trouble with Gabriel Knight 2 and now Gabriel Knight 3 wants me to "Please Insert CD1" right after I try to launch the game. What to do?
I'm happy at least Gabriel Knight 1 is playable :-)
Best regards,
Chris

toonbach: Yeah, this is definitely not solved.

Gydion: Actually, you are completely wrong. This is solved for the OP.

toonbach: I did a default install from gog and the first time I ran it, it worked perfectly. I saved my game and tried to go back in a few days later and got the "please insert cd1" issue. This really needs to be sorted out...
avatar
Gydion: Oh, you mean you have a different issue. For all of you still having problems you each need to contact support, if you haven't already. They may know of a solution/workaround for your particular case. It may also help GOG identify what the problem is to begin with.
Fair enough, my bad. I just meant seeing as there are people on here with the original issue, that it is still a problem. In any case, thanks for the input, but I managed to solve the problem I was having.

Which is why all of you should create a support ticket. Otherwise, everyone is hoping the correct blue stumbles over this thread and starts asking for the technical details of everyone's computers.

Still, the most important thing is you have the game running.
I second toonbach's solution. Unlike him though, I wasn't comfortable downloading a crack from game copy world.

I downloaded the "Gabriel Knight 3 New XP/Vista Installer" from the Sierra Help Pages on the internet. As pointed out earlier in this thread, this installer is meant to be used with the CD release of gabriel knight 3. Using 7zip (other compression programs may also work), I extracted the GK3.exe from the installer. Since the installer advertises CD-less play, presumably, the executable file I extracted has already been cracked.

I copied the extracted GK3.exe to the installation directory (overwriting the original one in the process) and the game worked fine afterwards.

I have only played for five minutes and it may not work for everyone, but trying this is worthwhile if you have any problems.
So my problem is different...I actually got the game running ( i guess gog fixed it) But now i am having trouble
picking up certain items, like the masking tape in the beginning, and talking to the guy in the newspaper in the lobby and leaving the hotel... I know i'm supposed to grab these items based on the various walkthroughs
i've looked at. Anyone else have the same problem?

toonbach: OK guys I found a solution that worked for me. I got a no-cd crack for the game from gamecopyworld ... just google search for it

I placed it in the ../GOG Games/Gabriel Knight 3 folder and replaced the original GK3.exe with this one. I then ran the new .exe with compatibility for window xp service pack 3, and it is now working.

I still find it ridiculous that I had to resort to doing this as Gog should have fixed this issue or at the very least supplied a solution to this problem, as it looks like people have been having problems with this game for a few years. Gog are still a quality site, but they have clearly messed up here.
this should be marked as a solution.

thanks, toonbach. virtual clone drive and other virtual drive programs DID NOT work for me. the no cd fix from game copy world works (for me). i don't necessarily mind that site as i use their no cd fixes for my physical copy of games but still, i agree that customers shouldn't have to resort to this for a purchased product.
I also had the same problem on my laptop, but i couldn't solve it by using a virtual drive.

I had to disable the physical CD / DVD drive in my laptop through the device manager, and then use a virtual drive. Now it works for me.

Maybe it has some problem detecting laptop CD / DVD drives?

EDIT:
No, i was wrong, now the prompt just appears at the main menu of the game, when i choose intro or play.

It came up instantly when i started the game before.

Just to add my two cents here. I ran into this same issue last night and contacted tech support, as someone here suggested. I was sent a link to download a new .exe file to replace the existing one. Now it works fine. Here is the link:

Hope that this will help others with the same issue.

Yes that did the trick... I'm glad I checked back.
Palidor12 has the solution. Just unzip her link in your GK3 folder and BAM!
Kinda liked the live action in GK2 but I'll get used to it I'm sure.
:) Fixed it

GK3 "please insert CD 1" issue NOT solved. I just bought the game. I am running Windows 7 on a desktop computer WITH a CD/DVD drive built in. The drive works fine. I also have installed the Virtual Drive software. Nothing is allowing me to get past the "Please insert CD 1" message. I already have the game settings set to administrator and Windows XP compatibility. I also made sure the game is installed properly in a GOG location (not the Games folder). Is there a way to get this stupid game to actually play, or did I just throw my money away?

Did you bother contacting support? GOG games come with a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee if support can't get them working. Post #37.
