So I'm on Day 6 of GK1. I go to the police station to get into Mosely's office, but the desk sergeant won't let me in. Fine. So I go get that beignet guy to go back to the police station. The desk sgt goes outside to buy some, and I figure that's my chance to get back to Mosely office and use the key he sent me.

Except... before I can do anything, the Sgt. immediately comes back. I can tell he doesn't even make it to the beignet stand. (One time, his animation also glitched so that it showed him in his sitting position while walking back to his desk.)

What's going on here? Is there some sort of fix or patch for this?

That's not a problem, don't worry. After the desk sergeant buys the donuts, he will fall asleep at his desk. Wait for the right moment and sneak in! :)

Wow, really? That's.... really silly.

Thanks.
For me the beignet guy didn't work as intended, instead the sergeant falls asleep AFTER I walk out and come back. Only problem is: he doesn't fall asleep for long enough for me to sneak in!! As soon as I get close to the door he wakes up and sends me back out...HELP!

what I found is that he never falls asleep entirely, he just does this head-bobbing thing. I managed to get through the swinging door the first time he did that, then got in the office the next time. Don't use the walk icon at all; just the door icon on the swinging door, and the key on Moseley's office door.

See I don't think the headbobbing thing works for me...
He bobs his head three times in a short period of time, the third one is longer than the first two. Just be sure you stand next to the gate-thingy when he does, to make the running in smoother.
I've had this problem when I have cycles set to auto in dosbox config file. Dosbox changed cycles to max and than the police officer was comming back too fast.
On my Phenom II X4 955 with 4GB Ram setting cycles to fixed 20000 solved the problem. And it work both ways. Officer is out for a longer time OR he falls asleep for a longer time.
Just watch the beignet guy as he approche the police station windows. If he is doing this extremly fast, You know that you have set too many cycles. Enjoy! :)

Thanks, this solved it for me and also some sound clippings. I can get in now even when they get out to beignets.

Oh, I hope I don't get hurt for asking that, but:
How exactly do I change the settings? I'm a real idiot when it comes to that technical stuff. So, an explanation even an idiot like me couldn't misunderstand would be very kind.
I'm stuck at this part, too, and Frick always wakes up before I reach the door to Mosleys office. (The third time he dozes off, I read the solutions first, sadly this doesn't work for me or I'm to slow.)
Thanks a lot. ^-^

In the remaining time, I'll try hard to sneak past Frick. Maybe I can advance the story, finally.

Go to the folder where you install the game (standart will be C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Gabriel Knight) and find a text file called dosboxGK.conf and open it with text editor ex. notepad.

Inside that file find entry:

core=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

and change line cycles=max to cycles=fixed 20000 so it would look like these now:

core=auto
cycles=fixed 20000
cycleup=500
cycledown=20

Save the file. If you are using notepad make sure that the file name is still dosboxGK.conf coz sometimes notepad changes the name to dosboxGK.conf.txt. If so press F2 and change the name again to dosboxGK.conf

Now when playing the game press alt+enter to leave fullscreen mode and make sure that in the upper part of the game window says Cpu speed: 20000.

And now get back to the game :)
Thank you very much!
I kept trying and I was finally quick enough to make it to the door yesterday. Frick still woke up, but Gabriel already opened the door and entered the office. ^^"

But I copied your information and saved it, when I'm stuck at this part next time I play. Again, thank you very much.
Thanks pykman! Three years later I've encountered the same problem and thankfully your solution is still here, and it worked.
