Ratbreath: Getting rock A is a matter of luck, but it's a common enough encounter. I got it on my first play-through after reinstalling the game. It's not that difficult, either. You don't even have to defeat the ship, you just survive until it jumps.

Unlocking B just takes firing off both of your missiles at once until a ship with a defense drone dies for the 'defense drones don't do anything' achievement, then for the other one you just throw a bunch of fire bombs onto the enemy ship and transport over and kill him.
I'm doing it wrong then - after 127 games played I've only stealth cruiser, Kestrel and Torus...
Wow. Really? You've never gotten this encounter? http://ftl.wikia.com/wiki/Rock_war_vessel_encounter

I keep getting it over and over again. At least I get rock plating if I'm not already flying a rock ship.

Not even once :(

You, sir, have obviously been cursed by evil gypsies. I probably shouldn't even be seen responding to you.

I spend ~15-20h playing FTL and stil have problems to beat the game on easy. I've beaten the first encounter with the rebel ship, but the second, I'm always lost. Now, I reached the last secotr and I'm in a better position with better weapons (you need a lot of luck to find good ones that are helpful), cloak, teleporter and max weapons/shields. I hope that this time I can beat the game but I must say: It's REALLY hard, yet challenging. It's fun to play, but my only real chance is to master the game with the Kestrel (+ B layout).

I have also the Engi Cruiser, the Stealth Cruiser and the Mantis Cruiser, but only with the Kestrel, I'm able to reach the last sector.

I think, I read enough guides and saw enough youtube-playthroughs, but I can't imagine beating the game on normal mode.

Perhaps I need a litle bit more luck, we'll see...

I haven't unlocked any of Kestrel achievments. My best score and gameplays come from Engi cruiser.

Much to learn though! :">
Yes, just beaten the boss on easy!!! Was really hard, but now I finished the game for the first time!
/e: And now: It's working, I mastered it twice. Time to change to "normal" mode. ;-)

Congrats! I think you'll find Normal isn't as hard as it first seemed. Once you start beating the game regularly on Easy, you'll find you have all the skills you require to beat Normal as well. The hardest part of the game is figuring out how to handle all the situations which the game can throw at you (some call this randomness). You start with less scrap an the enemy ships are slightly more powerful each sector as compared to easy, but the how-to handle each situation remains the same.
Are there things to unlock on normal mode? Or can all be done on easy?

An achievement of beating boss on normal, that's for sure :>
Other than that one achievement, everything can be achieved, completed, and unlocked in easy mode.
Although if you look at the achievements (both ship and others) they denote whether they have been unlocked on normal or easy. So if you are a die hard completionist, there would still be something to achieve.
FTL is a game that feels luck-heavy at first, but actually has a deceptively high skill-cap. Top-level players can consistently win on Normal difficulty virtually every single game with any ship. There are tons of tiny optimizations you can do, and in the end victory is determined by skill and knowledge - not by luck.
Exactly right, Twinge. But for some reason some people just can't accept that now well proven fact.

The Rock ship requires luck to find a beam weapon soon enough.
Generally you're right.
