In my opinion, THE greatest single-player space sim ever created (yes, even beats out X-Wing vs Tie Fighter).
For updated graphics, you can use the Freespace 2 Open Source Project but you must own the original game. So, get this, install, then go get the Freespace 2 SCP.
Two thumbs way way up!

I'd like to check this out, Question, do you need a special controller for this one, or will a razer mouse + keyboard do fine?

You can use a joystick like you do in a normal flight sim, or a keyboard/mouse combo. Personally, I prefer the joystick, but I've always been a combat flight simmer ^_^

Actually, the game has been declared abandonware, and is free and legal to download, the newest Freespace 2 Open Source Project installer, even does this automatically ;)

WRONG.
FreeSpace 2 was never abandonware - the license has not left the ownership of the original companies. However, due to Interplay's defunct status in the meantime individuals had been promoting the game by sharing it.
Since GOG.com now offers the game legally and for a minimal fee, any mirrors which were accessible through individuals on the SCP site have been taken down.
You MUST purchase the game legally in order to download and use the SCP expansion files. The online installer no longer includes the original game files. Frankly, a $6 charge for this excellent game is peanuts - buy it and support GOG. This site is a great way to get old games like this the legal way.
Information on the SCP installer can be found here: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,42854.0.html
