I have only heard good things about this game and its sequel.
But does it work in Windows 7 64 bit or is it like Sacrifice it bugs out in windows 7

I am playing FreeSpace 2 on Windows 7 64-bit right now. Look, I even wrote an installation guide. :')

You install FreeSpace 1 in a standard way. Just download and install.

I haven't tried the first one yet, but some people report only minor, fixable issues.

Besides, you can always use a first class port of FreeSpace 1 and it's addon campaing on your FreeSpace 2 copy.
