This game not only deserved the praise it was given as being the absolute greatest space sims of its time....it deserves the looooonnggg overdue sequel to one of the most compelling conclusions to a beautiful well written story in a space sim that I have ever experienced!! Please call out to THQ to bring this franchise back to US!
Sadly it only sold 25, 000 copies when it came out.
I didn't even know there was a third game.

There isn't a 3rd game. Only 2 were made. FS 2 only sold around 25, 000 copies and why FS 3 was never made.

Plus Volition are now owned by THQ and the Freespace rights owned by Interplay.
You can still play user-made campaigns. Quite a few of them are a continuation of FS2 story, and some are very interesting. Blue Planet, in particular, is pretty good in my opinion.
Well, it would be nice to know what happened to Admiral Bosh and know the truth about Shivans. User made mods are giving plenty of ideas but they are not as good as FS and FS2.
Playing last mission of FS my fighter exploded the same second, the rest of the wing finished the last reactor of Lucifer. So I died but won. And I still remember playing FS2 - how shocked I was with supernova ending. Trying to escape the shockwave... didn't make it (first time, anyway) :-)
But my greatest dream is to find Wing Commander series on GOG one day. In happy day, as a lucky Amiga user I played only first part of that game. I started with German version and couldn't understood anything from briefings :-) so I was using a map to know where to go and shooting anything red on radar. Playing again English version and enjoying the storyline was great pleasure.
Nova days I tried to play WC2 using DOSBox but it isn't working well, so I hope GOG will support me in some time...
All Wing Commander games run well with dosbox. I've tried Wing Commander 2 a few years ago and had no greater problems. If you have problems you can look here:
http://www.wcnews.com/techsupport.shtml
They have detailed instructions for any part.

Wing Commander series, or any Electronic Arts games, or games now owned by EA like Blade Runner, on gog would be fantastic. They made lot's of great stuff during the 90ties.

Thanks Cunctator!

I will surely check out this website. I also stuck in one of missions, maybe will find solution there :-)
If we all supported Evochron: Mercenary it might get enough hype for a big wig to see. Jumpgate Evolution is supposed to come out some time this century (and that should be cool).

I just want an open universe to explore but with the controls and awesomeness of FS2. It can have trade and all that stuff that makes an MMO an MMO, but it needs to stick with how it feels now.
I was one of those 25,000 then. I also bought two copies of the limited edition of the game.
Poor FreeSpace...

I love that game a ton. ;_;

X2 The Threat works alright for me.
Well thank you all for you input about where the franchise went. The question I'm wondering now is how many additional sales GOG.com will bring to freespace 2? Perhaps enough to get interplay thinking about freespace again?

a man can dream....

It is one of the better selling games on GOG (#6 in fact not counting free or once free games), but unfortunately I'm not sure what that translates into with hard numbers and if those are large enough for them to look at the franchise again. However, Interplay which went through a near death experience and is not out of it yet is looking to bring back some of its classic franchises. Wikipedia article and in development site. Freespace 3 however does not appear to be on the in development horizon.
