Game: Freespace 1&2 (vanilla)
Problem: Gamepad too sensitive

Hello,

I have been trying to configure my gamepad but it is very sensitive. I am sure you know what I mean: your target is slightly to your right so you gently go right but you end up with your target wayyyy on the left.

I tried to reduce the sensitivity to the minimum in the options but it had no effect at all (deadzone as well).

Is there a way to tweak this differently? If I install Freespace Open.... (I have FS2), will it work better for me?

Thanks
Gilou

[Second try: anyone has an idea?]
I *think* FS Open has better overall compatibility with controllers, but honestly I have no idea if it allows you to control sensitivity and deadband on a controller. I don't actually have a controller - I use a joystick - so I'm afraid I can't help you. If no one here is able to help you, check out the hard-light.net forums for FS Open and hopefully someone there will be able to answer your question.

There is also this thread here. Since some of them play with controllers, they might be able to answer better (if they are still around, since the thread is old, better to quote someone so they get a message tag). They also point to 3rd party software - some of which might allow you to artificially create deadband and sensitivity settings even if FS2 doesn't.

Anyway, best of luck!

I never played vanilla, but I can testify that the deadzone can be changed in FSO. The default deadzone was HUGE.

What is the deadzone btw?

Deadzone denotes the amount you can move your joystick/controller stick before the craft will begin moving in that direction. So the larger I set deadzone, the more I have to push the stick down to get the craft to pitch "down". This ensures small/accidental signals don't get sent to the fighter and thus the fighter becomes difficult to control, requiring too many little adjustments from your accidental joystick movements. Set the deadzone too large though and it becomes difficult to control the craft because too little of the spectrum of joystick movement translates into craft movement. You thus end up with only the ability to denote large craft movement or the joystick's delta between small and large craft movement very small - similar to setting sensitivity too high and deadband too low but where the joystick delta is all near the stick's periphery rather than the center.

I'll have to try that then.

Thanks, I'll be back to tell if it worked
