Playing this on a laptop, and when I get to the skill-buying page between chapters, the menu defaults to displaying the fighter. F11 and F12 are shown as buttons to cycle through other characters, but as this is a laptop, all it does is adjust my sound and put me in airplane mode. There's no binding option for these keys in the options menu either. Does anyone know of a way to cycle through characters here, or do I resign myself to spending all my upgrade points (gold? XP? it's not clear) on the fighter?

On laptops there are often special functions bound to certain keys (e.g. the F-keys), which are shown in a different color. Whether the standard function, here F11 and F12, or the special function, here sound adjustment and airplane mode, are activated by default is configurable (e.g. in a driver menu of the Windows control panel). But no matter the current default, there should be as specific key on your keyboard to toggle between both functions when pressed. Usually this key is labelled "Fn" (see here for details). Press and hold it while using F11 and F12 should solve your problem or check out how to toggle the standard function on your device. Check system settings.
