Thrilled beyond belief to finally see these games here. I missed these as they were my first experience with D&D on any type of computer. I'm running into some issues though. I can't seem to figure out how to transfer my characters between games. most notably from silver blades to pools of darkness.
The other issue is inside pools I can't seem to remember where to go for training and selling after you leave Phlan in the beginning.
I would love to play these through from PoR-PoD (Possibly skipping PoR due to no pallies). If anyone can figure out what needs to be done to get the character transfer to work that would be awesome. As well as reminding me where to train and id/sell loot.

Thanks,
Ralph

I don't have the games installed, so I can't help with the characters transfers, but as for training and trading you'll just need to fins those places. There are places marked on the map in the journal. Some of them may have facilities.

IIRC there are full facilities at the Taydome's Keep/Giants Steading and Zhentil Keep, and limited facilites at Melvaunt, in addition to smaller places.

Ok, I think I can help. The character transfer process is little bit different in every game, which is annoying. Also, it's not always possible to do it in-game. The way GOG configured DOSBox makes it a pretty difficult to achieve a character transfer.

To your questions:

1. Training is only possible in training halls. In some games it costs 1000 gold pieces (=200 platinum pieces) per level. Usually the cities have one training hall, but some haven't and you must backtrack a bit. In POD the first/best location to level up (after the prologue) is Dragonhorn Gap.

2. Identifying and selling loot can be done in every shop (regardless of what they're selling IIRC). Again, you must get "lucky" and happen to be in a town where there are any. In POD, again, the first/best location is Dragonhorn Gap.

3. Character transfer
Firstly, BACKUP your game files!

3.1 POR -> COTAB:
- copy the whole directory (not just the content) \Pool of Radiance\POOLRAD to \Curse of the Azure Bonds\
- Edit the file dosbox_coab_single.config in a text editor by deleting the last line ("exit") from it.
- Edit the short cut "Launch Curse of the Azure Bonds" and delete the parameter "-exit" at the end of the "target" command.
- Launch the game and exit from it.
- type COPYCURS and hit [ENTER]
- navigate (with the cursor keys) to "Pool of Radiance to Curse of the Azure Bonds"
- when asked "Move characters FROM which drive?" select "other"
- default should be C:\POOLRAD. If not enter C:\POOLRAD
- when asked "Move characters TO which drive?" select "other"
- default is C:\CURSE\SAVE. Change that to C:\SAVE
- Done.

3.2 COTAB -> SOTSB
This is the most annoying one.
You cannot transfer your characters when they are "in" a party. You must remove them from your party before trying to export them. This must be done in COTAB's main menu (remove character from party).
Important note: If you've beaten the game and saved & exited it, you can't remove your characters anymore. You must either do it from a previous savegame or right after beating the game BEFORE exiting it.
- launch COTAB and load your save
- remove all characters from party
- exit the game
- copy the whole directory \Curse of the Azure Bonds\SAVE to \Secret of the Silver Blades\
- launch SOTSB
- choose "Add character to party", then "CURSE"
- you should see a list of your COTAB characters; add them
- done

3.3 SOTSB -> POD
This should be the "easiest" one.
- copy the whole directory \Secret of the Silver Blades to \Pools of Darkness
- then rename that directory from "Secret of the Silver Blades" to "SECRET"
- launch POD
- choose "load save game", then "SECRET"
- done

GOG made it unnecessarily difficult mainly because of the long names for the game directories and the addition of the exit command so that the DOSBox window closes right after exiting the game.
However, the procedures described above should work, even if they are a bit convoluted.

First, I'd like to thank you for letting us know about how to go about transferring characters... though I seem to be having problems. I'm trying to transfer characters from Pool of Radiance to Curse... followed your instructions and I keep getting an error in the transfer attempt: Couldn't copy characters from C:\POOLRAD\ to C:\SAVE . Any thoughts?

Try it without the "\" after C:\POOLRAD\

Another possibility: If you check the contents of your Curse of the Azure Bonds directory, it should look like this. (see attached image).

Let me know if this helps.

I made a video documenting the process. Maybe it's of use to you:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgODb8-qcqk
Ok, for the sake of completeness, I've uploaded videos showing the character transfer for the whole Pool-of-Radiance-series:

POR -> COTAB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgODb8-qcqk

COTAB -> SOTSB: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gv13K5VSitI

SOTSB -> POD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwRyMfywQyA

Maybe they're of some use.

Appreciate the video, did that before. But uninstalled/reinstalled Curse to redo from scratch, I still get the same error. I thought it may be corrupted or such, but it still loads up in Pool of Radiance. Granted, I could more or less recreate them all using GoldBoxCompanion, so it's not a huge deal.. is just... odd. Thanks for your help and for the videos. :)

I totally forgot to mention the necessary first step: As heyrainier pointed out here https://www.gog.com/forum/forgotten_realms_collection/how_to_transfer_characters_in_the_pool_of_radiance_series/post2
you'll need to load your savegame in POR and remove all characters from your party (in POR's training hall menu) before starting the transfer process.
That really should do the trick.

Bingo!!!

Thank you for your excellent help Doc!
hello,
I want to be able to change the save directory from c:\save to a:\save

ive moved the save folder from pool of darkness to the diskette. and I have edited the poodark cfg file to save to A:\save\

I get an insert disk into A:

I already have a disk in the floppy drive. it is a usb floppy drive
Since this game runs in dosbox, you'll have to tell dosbox where to find your disk drive. You'll have to edit dosbox's conf-file and write in something like "mount a a:\".
Trying to transfer characters from Blades to POD. Tried the methods mentioned and a few others but still get a can't find SSB file error. Have put save games in save game, whole game in other game, etc. still get the same error. Any ideas?
Try putting the contents of the SAVE directory from Secret of the Silver Blades in this path:
C:\GOG Games\Pools of Darkness\SECRET\SAVE

I believe that path is specified in the POOL4.CFG file.
Sooooo, how is this done on a Mac? There is no 'Save' folder within the package contents. I'm primarily a windows user and could achieve this on a PC, but am about clueless on how to do it on a Mac.
