Had same problem too, and just deleted the offending SPC file. - Worked perfect afterwards...

Just hope I'm not saving problems for later in the game (by deleting).

Yes, equipping Ioun Stones and other stat enhancing items will mess up characters imported from Pool of Radiance. It's a known bug.

I simply deleted the offending file (the .spc file) as well, and three saves in, it's worked.

I write only because I'm playing on a Mac.

Played this back when it was first released on 5 1/2" floppy disks, replaying many years later and ran into the same problem in 2021. Easiest fix, have the character get killed and then resurrected back in town, fixed it for me when I couldn't get the .SPC fix to work, hope that helps!
