HI all,

So I've transferred my characters from Eye of the Beholder 1, through Darkmoon, and up to Myth Drannor.

But the sound in EOB III has this horrible crackling that drowns everything else out. Can anyone help?

Download Dos32a (dos32a-912-bin.zip)
and replace dos4gw.exe with dos32a.exe
(so delete/rename it and rename dos32a.exe to dos4gw.exe)

The reason is a bit complicated and has to do with ems pages.

If anyone else looks at this, I downloaded the files here: http://dos32a.narechk.net/content/download.html
There is an attachment in the link that Qbix has referred to, but it seems to be a different set of files
Too complicated, I wasted about an hour to finally fix Eye of the Beholder 3.

For anyone who wants to apply the *crackling* sound fix (DOS4GW.EXE) and the updated portraits (EYE.RES) with no hassle here is a download link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1s05y5qoHff_wup0McjG_VPLW2iIXT0FC/view?usp=sharing

How to use:

1. Install Eye of the Beholder III game from GOG (that version is already upgraded to Aesop/32 engine)

2. Copy and replace files DOS4GW.EXE (fix for crackling sounds) and EYE.RES (updated portraits) to your game folder.

Please note that portraits preview from Gather a new party screen will still look like in original game (the worse version).

Sorry, but fix doesn`t work for me. Still hear that awful crackling and birdlike-sounds on all maps.

What, it can't be. Let me check again.

No, it works like a charm for me. I specifically checked the *crackling* freshly installed version from GOG and then replaced DOS4GW.exe file from archive to my game folder. Did you replace that file? It should have 27 kb size only, original file is 260 Kb

And since GOG already has the updated Aesop/32 version of EoB 3 my archive is a bit obsolete, the only meaningful files are DOS4GW.exe (made from renaming of DOS32A.exe) and EYE.RES, the updated file with portraits converted into Aesop/32 version.

Ok, maybe I`m wrong and that sound-"problems" are the intended sounds. If so, it was better in EOB 1 + EOB 2 without sounds, but slashing sounds.

Make sure they are gone. Crackling sounds are very noticeable first thing when you start a new game, every second swing to a ghost would blow out in a myriad of crackling popping sounds very similar to those when your sound card is initialized in a DOS game. It's almost impossible to play that way, you can reinstall the game a check again.

As for the sounds and everything else, this game was made by SSI on a different engine. EoB 1-2 games were better in every way except they lack MT-32 music.
