Well, i was recently gifted this game, and i cant figure out what im supposed to do at the start. all i can find is a locked door. can someone please help me in my moment of stupidity? :P

Locked doors must be opened by picking the lock. This is one of the Skills available, accessible either by the Skilldex on the interface, or by the number pad at the top of the keyboard, organized in the same order as on the Skilldex. Once you select the skill, your cursor will be altered; with the new, yellow, altered cursor, click the door.
This applies to all skills. For example, if you see an injured person (or injured cow, or whatever) and wish to heal it, you can select the First Aid or Doctor skills, and use that newly yellow cursor to click said critter to heal him or her up. (Only works outside of combat, as I recollect.)
Best familiarize yourself with them. They're a major part of the game. I do suggest you read the manual, but saying that alone might be needlessly discouraging.
If I got that correctly, you stuck in the very first room on temple?
If that is the case, just go through northwestern door and continue journey but look out for ants.

oh, you dont need bobbypins in this game? ok, thanks for the help :)
It really is a good idea to read the manual... the Fallout games do not have a particularly good interface, and on top of that they have a rather complex skill and combat system, so it can be very confusing to figure out how to play on one's own. The manual, while long, goes through everything and should help a lot.

It's worth the trouble though! The Fallout games really are great once you figure out the systems.
You have to admit, the Fallout 2 manual isn't half as awesome as the Fallout 1 manual.
Five pages comparing the effects of differing yields of atomic weapons. That was great.
