I have a very strange problem. The Fallout wiki, as well as people I have talked to who played the original Fallout, tells me that Fallout had diminishing returns for skills past 100, that is: if I have a skill at 101% and wish to increase it, I have to spend double the amount of skill points per skill rank gained.
In the version of Fallout I purchased from Gog, this does not happen. I just leveled up from level 3 to level 4, and with the 25 skill points I got I was able to increase my "small guns" skill from 115% to 165% (it's a tagged skill).
By "skills" I mean the numbers displayed on the character page under "skills" - I have not tested whether my high-skill characters actually get the benefits of their illegally high skill ranks.
I do not have any mods or cheats installed. CTRL-V tells me this is Fallout 1.2, dated Mar 10 1998, 18:01:49.
Am I right that there were diminishing returns on skills in the original version of Fallout? Do other people get them in the Gog version of Fallout? If not, is there any way to fix this bug?
Thanks.

have you tried it for non-tagged skills?

Weclock: have you tried it for non-tagged skills?

No, my character hasn't gotten to that point yet (I stopped playing when I encountered this, because I'll start over if it turns out that I have been unintentionally "cheating"). However, I can't see anything anywhere indicating that it should happen for tagged skills, either?
It'd be helpful if someone else who has the Gog version of Fallout 1 could indicate whether they see this in the game.

I have it, but I'm reluctant to actually try it.
Er, why? Surely whether or not this happens is something you'd notice during the course of a regular game, merely by getting to the point where you can raise your main skills above 100%?
I encountered this at 3rd level, and I don't think I was doing anything at all unusual.
Your game is working correctly. I get the same thing on my copy of the game. I don't think the original Fallout ever had diminishing returns in the first place anyway.
The Fallout Wiki and the people you talked to are wrong. In Fallout raising skills past 100 doesn't cost more skill points, they obviously played Fallout2 last and concluded it would be the same in Fallout, especially since hardly anyone raises skills above 100 in the original Fallout anyway, it's quite useless.

It doesn't I just loaded up my retail copy of fallout 1 and I tryed leveling a couple of different skills up, none of them had any diminshing returns. I think kmonster is right, its a wiki so anyone can add information to it even if the information is wrong.
Okay, since so many of you are saying that this is the way it should be I guess it's probable that you're right. I do find it odd that the wiki and several people misremembered in exactly the same way, though -- but I guess they were all extrapolating from Fallout 2.
Thanks for the help!

Well like I said I just about 20 minutes ago went into my retail copy of fallout and tested it with small guns and unarmed skills and neither of them had diminishing returns up to about 160%. So I think your safe in continuing your game.
