I am getting an error message every time i try to play fallout 1.. i just got it downloaded last night.. i used the 'download off browser' and things worked out perfectly.. but when i try to play it goes black.. and i hear an error sound.. my error is"The instruction at 10003023 referenced memory at 00000000 the memory could not be read from
click OK to terminate the application"
any help?

What kind of hardware are you running?
Are you running the game in admin mode? Also, shut off any AV software to start.

Anti-virus.
Look in the compatibility menu for fallout.exe. There should be a little box that says "Run this program in administrator mode". Even though you're on the admin account on your PC you still have to set that admin mode on individual programs.

right click on the shortcut, select properties, then select compatibility.

There's no check box to mark for me to run it as an administrator. Which box should I click?

much apologies, I was revewing just "how to access the compatibility menu" and not actually what you were trying to do.
Make sure any antivirus scanning programs are disabled, as well as spyware programs.
Also, it's possible your installation may have become corrupted, try reinstalling/redownloading also you may want to make sure your display supports the 640x480 resolution (some of them don't) there is no general area for this, so you will have to check with your video card manufacturer, also make sure your video card drivers are up to date.
edit:
one last thing you could try doing, is the installation method mentioned in this thread.
The Fallout Faq that I wrote (with help of other users) should be helpful in many situations.

I'm having pretty much the same problem.
Running a Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002
448 MB of RAM, 2.08 GHz processor. AVG 7.5 virus protection. UniChrome S3G card.
The error message only showed up once- other that that, after clicking the desktop icon to start the game, the screen goes black and the computer makes the "windows error noise."
The only way to get out of the screen is to press the Esc key, and Fallout is shown as "not responding."
I also did the "download from browser" option.
Tried disabling the AV already, no go.
has anything been shown as a solution yet?

(btw, I've heard that the S3G is a big pile of suckage for gaming. True?)

Could be...but it *shouldn't* be a problem for older games. Post me a dxdiag and I will try to help you find some device drivers for your card (or at least see how old they are and eliminate them from the pool of potential problems...)

Oops sorry.
Hit your Start button.
Look for a Run command somewhere within the STart menu. Click on that.
Type in "DXDIAG" (without quotes) and it should come on automatically . Hit the "Save All Information" button and it should save everything about your PC in a .txt file...Save that file to your desktop.
Open it up then Copy the text in the file and then just paste it into the next post you make in this thread.
