I just bought Fallout and encountered a problem when trying to launch the game.

When I open Fallout I get a black screen and an error. The error says: Error initializing video mode 640x840.

I understand this problem may have came up with other people so any help or a link to a topic with a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Aren´t you trying to play the game on netbook? I experienced this error on my Asus EEE. It is quite logical as its resolution is non-standard. However it can be easily solved with AsTray program. If you are using desktop or standard laptop, try to play with resolution settings a bit.
No actually, I'm on your average standard acer PC.

I did try to lower my resolution but my screen doesn't go to that low of a setting.
In that case, there may be a problem with drivers. At "No mutants allowed" web, I found this forum - try to read it. Maybe you can find a solution there.

Funny that you mention that it might be my drivers. I had a similar problem with minecraft the other day. It was mentioned that it might be my drivers for that also. The problem was similar to this, in that I couldn't get it to start. It would load up then I'd get a black screen saying something about the pixel format not accelerating.

I'd almost bet it is just my crappy graphics card. It's a SiS mirage that was standard with my PC. Fully up to date as well.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I checked and tried everything from that thread and nothing has worked so far.

Try downloading and installing the hi res patch.

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42386

Once that is installed find the games folder on your computer and open f1_res configuration settings file with notepad.(run as administrator if on win7/vista and having installed to program files.)

Once thats open change the scr_width to 800 and the scr_height to 600 see if it will launch then.
Yeah I tried that Ralackk. Still nothing.

Rather annoying. Just a waste of money now.

hmm you might just have to buy a cheap graphics card and throw it into your computer to get it running. Never even heard of that sis mirage before.
So, now I have completely the same problem with Fallout 2. I just finished Fallout 1 on my Asus eee. It worked perfect with help of AsTray+ utility. But Fallout 2 gives me this 640x480 error and nothing helps. I searched the net a bit and it seems that it is a common problem which has no solution in many cases. OK, it happens and I will move to Icewind Dale, I´ll give it a time...
Yeah I've been putting away money for a few months now for a decent gaming rig. So a cheap graphics card will just set that back a bit. That said, I'll be sure to choose a graphics card that can go back to 8 bit and 640x480 resolution.

Thank you both for the help.

Edit: Well I decided to take one last look around before giving up on this until I get a gaming rig. I went and renamed the draw.dll files to ini files and it worked!

I now face a newer problem. It loads up fine, plays the intro video fine and then just stops. Once the intro video is done the screen turns all funny colored and just stops working. This also happens if I try to skip the intro but the screen just goes green instead. Any ideas for this one?

I have this same problem now. It goes rainbow-like after the intro and if I try to skip the intro it goes green. Did you manage to find a fix since November?

I think I have seen this issue around the GOG forums before... I recall the solution having something to do with setting the colors to 16-bit. Check around the forum for problems with rainbow colors and you should find it.

You can also check the No Mutants Allowed forums for the same issue.

EDIT:

Yeah, check Vagabond's posts in the following thread about setting 16-bit color and see if that helps:
