I've got a weird problem. I've just installed Fallout, along with the list of recommended mods. Upon booting it up, during the opening Interplay logo of the spaceship, the game gets minimized and I get kicked back to my desktop. If I click on the Fallout task at the bottom of my desktop and get it maximized again, it only runs a few more seconds until the "Brian Fargo presents" and then it minimizes again. What the hell?
Any ideas about what may be causing this? I've never heard of a program minimizing itself every couple of seconds like this.

I've had similar issues after installing the mod for being able to run in windowed mode, after uninstalling the mod, the game worked fine. I recommend uninstalling and reinstalling, and seeing if it works without the mods.
UPDATE:
Thanks for the suggestion, I gave it a shot.
First, I uninstalled just the high resolution patch and tried running the game. I got the same results as before, the game minimized every few seconds.
I then decided to uninstall everything and reinstall Fallout and try it without any of the additional mods or patches, just straight as it comes from GOG. I'm still having the problem, though, the only difference being that it minimizes every 10 seconds or so, instead of every three.
So it looks to me like one of the mods or patches is possibly aggravating the problem, but the root of the problem is that something is wrong with the way the game from GOG and my computer are interacting.

I've never had it happen that often, when I've had it happen it's always been some other program though. (usually a firewall or antivirus)
Try quitting everything you don't absolutely have to have running on the PC.

Folding @ Home! That was the culprit. I don't know why that would bother with Fallout, but as soon as I closed Folding @ Home, Fallout starting running fine for me. I'll just have to remember to close that up whenever I want to play I guess.
Thanks for the suggestion of quitting out of everything because I never would have thought that F@H was causing the problem.

NP at all, glad to hear you found the troublemaker.
TBH I would never have thought of F@H either, I can't remember having problems with it while I used it or other types of distributed computing...
I used to have that problem with F@H on css with the graphical client. The console client works fine with games.

Hey, I don't think this topic is solved.

I have been having trouble with Fallout 2 minimizing itself to the desktop every couple of minutes (I don't know if this affects Fallout 1 as well). It's super annoying! I have tried with a clean install from GOG and with the Restoration Project and it happens under both.

One thing I noticed is that during combat, the game will not immediately minimize itself if it's NOT the player's turn, but then will immediately minimize once the player regains control. Perhaps this will help in tracking down this bug.

Other things I've tried include closing all other programs, running the game in compatibility mode, running the game as an administrator, running the game from the installation directory instead of the GOG launcher, running the game in Direct Draw and Direct X... None of it helps.

The game also has the nasty habit of making everything on the screen black when you do jump back to the game. You have to use your mouse to "reveal" the game's graphics or move the screen or the barter or dialogue menus for the game to look normal again. This doesn't happen every time, but it is quite frequent.

Also, it would be nice if the game would include itself on the task bar because the only way to go back to the game that I've found is through Task Manager. Alt+Tab'ing or Win+Tab'ing will not work for some crazy reason.

Please help!
I was having this problem, I changed my resolution to 1280x720p and haven't had a single crash since. I don't think it has to be that specific resolution, but default may be causing the problem, and 1080p looks ridiculous
