anyone else planning on boycotting this game because they are using sucku-rom for a "simple" disk check? I don't like the idea of malware on my computer. Its unfortunate because i was actually going to buy this game too when they said it was only going to have a simple disk check. Then i found out that it was going to be checked by sucku-rom. It seems like more and more companies are doing this too. It makes me mad because im a PC-gamer at heart and DRM is killing it.
Well, I know I definitely am not Boycotting it. I just got the Xbox 360 version instead. :)

its not the same unfortunately. Its too bad too because the Xbox doesn't even have disk checks from what i hear.
Thought about boycotting, but decided to buy it anyway, albeit from Direct2Drive. Found out after I downloaded the game I still had to activate it, go figure.
I am not entirely opposed to some form of DRM, but I despise securom almost as much as I hold animosity towards starforce.
The only reason I buy games with it is because I've never had an issue *knock on wood* and there are certain games I really want, so I get them.

From what I understand, if you do have the NXE update you can install the game onto your hard drive and you do need to have the disc in your drive for a check (because if you could just install games then couldn't you just lend them to your buddy?), but you don't get to install mods or anything like taht so that is a downpoint.
Just get the no-cd. Works fine. I've been playing FO3 for a few days. Pretty good, just not quite the same. All in all it's better than Oblivion and worse than FO1 & 2. Either way it's a great game! I bought the collector's edition for PC. Bobble heads are cool.
Do you have any idea what malware is?
Anyway, apparently the steam version is for you. Should be just the simple disc check as far as I have read.
And oddly enough it seems to run on my comp without the dvd in. Only the launcher seems to require it..
Bought it from Steam, no SecuRom present, I'm happy :D

I did the same. So there is not spyware-rom like bioshock?

Nope, I've checked it :-)

you're 100% sure that the steam version does not include secuROM?
Yea, it has the disk check SecuRom, but the funny thing is. It is only attached to the launcher exe file. So, you can just run the game exe instead and it bypasses it. Don't need the dvd unless you need to change some of the settings in the launcher.
I do wish they would have just gone with there own in house cd-check program, instead of using SecuRom.
well, i answered my own question. i found this statement from valve which says unequivocally that there is no secuROM in the steam version of fallout 3.

That would be too simple a solution, and someone at Bethsoft decided they >had< to spend money on some form of DRM, though they tried to say it's not really DRM.
These companies think that because of the pirating they need to protect their product, but the end result is (I witnessed this first-hand) the pirates STILL get the DRM-removed version either before launch or within a day or two after.
How did I witness this? I checked a torrent site for FO3 downloads around time of launch. Yep, it was up, 3k people were downloading it, and it had no DRM. And this was one site. Another site someone else checked had 12k people downloading FO3.
DRM does not stop pirates, it aggravates legitimate users and creates pirates (from what I've heard from friends and on the net). Anyway who knows why these companies don't just use the in-house cd check? They'd probably collectively save millions in licensing fees, and the end-result would be better games because they'd have a bigger budget.
Whether you're pro or anti torrent, I think it's naive to assume that DRM stops any pirating at all.
NOTE: The Direct2Drive version has an online activation procedure, but I have no clue if it's securom or not. All I know is I wrote down my activation code since it has a manual activation option.
If it's not securom then D2D is another viable option, but I have a feeling it is...

Yup, I totally agree with you CymTyr. I went with a retail copy instead of STEAM this time, because I had to have the bobblehead.
Anyway. I did some more digging up on this, and I found this link. http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/10/31/fallout-3-drm-detailed/1
From what I understand. It only kicks in for the cd check when you use the launcher and that's it. It doesn't run in the background while playing the game, or after your done playing. Plus, like what I said in my other post, you can bypass it totally just by running the game .exe instead of the launcher. As much as I hate to admit it, this is one form of securom I can live with.
