I'm looking for help on two quests. Stumbling on the sometimes difficult resolution of minor quests is a lot of the fun of this game, but I'm stuck on two of them and wouldn't mind a few pointers (I've LOVED solving quests in roundabout ways and often in far distant locations, but again, these two have stumped me!).

The first is the raider base quest. This is the one given by Vault City, where you are tasked with locating the raiders. I've located them (between VC and Broken Hills? A bit south of VC, near the Bridge of Monty Python ;) ), but I can't get into their base because of a double chain link fence. I've tried using some explosives, but they seem to behave a bit differently than I'm used to them behaving when blowing open doors. I never get an option to time them when interacting via holding my mouse click, so I think I'm supposed to find another way to unlock the chain link double doors. Any idea how? My lockpick is terrible, so that's not an option. Based on how the game has played so far, I refuse to believe completing the quest depends on me having a high Lockpick skill only!

The second quest is the mine in Broken Hills. I have the part I need to repair the mine, I just lack the protective gear! Does it exist? This is one where I didn't exhaust all my options (I haven't tried using RadAway and just rushing the mine to get to the system I'm supposed to fix) but I get the impression I'm meant to find protective gear... and I can't find it! Please help ;)

Also, wow what an amazing game. I just got my car and am looking forward to zipping around the map after I clear out a few of my lingering quests. Been having a ton of fun.

IIRC, there should be a 2nd entrance, but you need a map. Also, there's a safe which is difficult to pick and booby-trapped, so you need high Traps and Lockpick skills anyway to open it.

The only protective gear capable of helping in this case is power armor.
Radaway won't help but a fully healed character should have enough HP to survive running there even without power armor, for healing HP afterwards there are many options. You can dismiss the other party members temporarily to avoid them getting injured as well.

Good to know and thanks for the help! Kmonster I'm going with the "run like hell" option for now, as I don't have access to power armor so I feel bad not marking you as a solution. Thanks much for the extra info both of you.
Yeah, Power Armor is the only protection for the mine. I've done it by running before though. You have to be quick and keep some stims at the ready.

Running blindly through worked fine for me! For anyone interested, I did it with 54 HPs (this isn't my total) a level 14ish character and I think no stimpacks. My END is actually a bit subpar at 4 or 5. Could oneshot the ants so that helped. I left my party in town just in case. I'm a save scumming cheater and I reload whenever one of them dies ;) I didn't want to waste time reloading here.

Oh and just an FYI - you no longer take damage after the part is installed. I was unsure if it would "vent" right away but as soon as you get that part in, the mine is safe again.
I didn't want to make another topic but I have another pair of Fallout 2 questions!

The first - how do I refuel the car? I think I just mouse over it, hold down Left Mouse and pick Inventory Bag, then use some of the energy cell "ammo" I have. But before I try that I thought I'd just ask. Also, wouldn't mind knowing what kind of ECell I need just in case I have one or two types.

Second, and please try not to be too spoilerish. I decided to help the intelligent Deathclaws. This seems to be a good move but does it have awful repercussions down the line? I don't mind light spoilers, but I'm curious if I should be doing this ;) It's "in character" for me (goodie character willing to talk things out with others who seem to be "legit") so there's that but I don't want to find out they promptly storm the wasteland and enslave humanity as cattle!

Yep. You can use either microfusion cells or small energy cells.

And don't worry about helping Deathclaws. :p

triock: helpful answers
Thanks very much for the reply triock! And good to know I can use both types! I probably would have put in one, it would have worked and then gone nuts later when my car ran out of gas and I have the other type in my inventory all along, never being tried! ;)
And another question, this time related to lockpick items.

I had previously been using "standard" lockpick kits. The lockpick set (a red "book" of lockpicks) and the expanded lockpick set (again, there's a red "folder" that holds a lot of little metal lockpicks).

Recently, I picked up something called a Lockpick MK II, it looks like some sort of Matrix era nanobot syringe, with three prongs. I thought this would be the better version of my previous lockpick sets. However, when I go to use it, it seems like I can't. Do I need to keep my earlier expanded lockpick set? How exactly do I use the MK II lockpick as it seems to be used in a different manner than the previous lockpick sets.

In other words, when I go to use the skilldex my new shiny MKII lockpick doesn't seem to have an effect. Am I wrong on this, or am I using the item incorrectly? Any help would be great! (Sorry I don't have the exact name! But the item looks almost like a Stimpack, and has "MKII" in the title - hope that helps!).

That would be Electronic lock pick Mk II, so only for electrically-powered doors and security devices.

I got a weird end game card on my last playthrough even though I helped them out. It was like I didn't. Game registered it as if I attacked and exterminated them. Hell, I even had Goris with me for the duration of the game. Must have been some bug.

Thanks, yes that's the one. Looks like I was a bit hasty in selling my expanded lockpick set. I hope I have a spare in the trunk of my car! ;)

Was Goris the guy (well, Deathclaw ;) ) from the Enclave base in Navarro? I freed him too, but he took off once I left the bunker. Hmm maybe I can see if he went back to the Vault.

Nope. Goris can be found in Vault 13 when you first get there and if they even let you in without violence. If your Karma is sufficiently high, he can join you. He wears a robe.
