This happens sometimes when I'm in the middle of playing: none of the controls work, and all I can do is scroll around the map by moving the mouse. Clicks and right clicks on the playing area are ignored.

When I go to someplace with a list or scrolling list -- like character skills, or save game slots -- the list keeps scrolling down at top speed no matter what. This makes me think that it's acting like my down (or up?) arrow key is permanently pressed.

Switching in and out of Fallout 2 as the active app doesn't fix it, and closing a game and then opening a new game doesn't fix it. Quitting all the way out of Fallout 2 fixes it of course -- until it happens again.

Aaah!

Any help appreciated.

This is a driver issue. The cure? Reboot your computer.
That didn't do it -- restarted twice. Do you know any more details? This behavior still happens, as well as the game suddenly ignoring all clicks in the playing area. Again, I have to quit and restart the game.

(Win 7 home premium, SP1, 64 bit.)

Thanks all for any help, this is so frustrating.

Then check any keybinding software that you may have that might be interfering with input during play. The issue you described sound exactly like a very common driver glitch.

Don't have any keybinding software, this system is pretty vanilla. You have any idea how to try to track down what it is? (It just happened again! :-)

Without knowing your system it's difficult. I would completely uninstall the game, then re-install, just to make sure it's not something funky going on with the install, or configurations. Other than that, if it's not a driver issue, then I really don't know what else to suggest.

Okay. Driver for what, might you suspect?

Input devices: mouse, keyboard, wheel, joystick/pad. Any input device.
Figured it out!

My system is pretty vanilla Windows 7, no external input devices even.

BUT, it's a laption -- and on this Lenovo model, the trackpad has a scrolling area along the right edge:swipe up, scroll up, swipe down, scroll down.

If you invoke this -- that is, if you happen to swipe there -- that's when Fallout 2 won't *stop* scrolling.

In case anyone else ever has this problem.

(BTW, running the game as admin or not, or in protected mode or not, doesn't affect this problem.)

Same problem on a Asus, fixed it with disabling the "two finger scroll smart gesture"
Confirmed with LeNovo Y40.... disabled the touchpad and played by mouse
