Long time lurker, first time poster reporting in!

The game installed and plays fine, i just have no sound. This is most likely due to how my system is setup. Let me explain. My computer outputs both video and digital audio via HDMI from my video card. This goes to my home theater receiver. The receiver outputs the sound to my speakers and then outputs the video via HDMI to my 24" 1920x1200 monitor.

It seems like a lot of old games fail to have any sound due to me not actually having a sound card. Often times it is because the game functions at a different resolution than my desktop so it has to switch (causing everything to blink out). This causes the receiver to quit sending/accepting audio for about 1 second. Since this is during the startup of the game, many games then detect no sound output and turn it off.

Some games, like Dungeon Siege will allow me to turn the sound back on and then everything works. Others, like Fallout or Empire Earth just refuse to have any sound at all.

This question / problem has been solved by dariushimage
I feel the need to revive this thread as I'm facing the same problem (no sound at all) with the same setup (computer->receiver->screen/speakers). Tried fiddling with all the compatibility options and audio configuration options but nothing seems to work.

I would greatly appreciate any solution, but for now it seems like this game will be collecting digital dust on my GoG-shelf :(

EDIT: Installed the FIXT patch, switched to a higher resolution, and now it works!

I know this is 3 years old now but I never found a fix and just now wanted to play again to try this game out. I am still having the same issue as I was before. I am currently downloading the FIXT patch and will mark your post as a solution if it works!
Maybe an error detecting the sound device?

Open fallout.cfg file, look for the [sound] section and put in it those values:

[sound]
cache_size=448
device=-1
dma=-1
initialize=1
irq=-1
master_volume=22281
music=1
music_path1=data\sound\music\
music_path2=data\sound\music\
music_volume=22281
port=-1
sndfx_volume=22281
sounds=1
speech=1
speech_volume=22281
