Just an announcement that no one has posted here yet. I got fallout for free during the beginning of the year on GOG. Anyone who owns Fallout 1 it's now on the Mac. Which is awesome, I love this series and am gonna download it. Just letting you know so you Mac gamers (like me) can play.. Also this is the only version of the game I've seen you can play on Mac.
The mac version is the dos version packaged with dosbox.

I wonder what the differences between the dos and windows versions are?

Also, can you install mods? I've seen something for an android version, which I guess uses the dosbox too, so it may be possible.
Maybe its just me but I've noticed slowdown when loading the menus. Is anyone else having this problem?

I've noticed this as well. On my computer (a 2011 macbook air running 10.7.5) the "fade" between different menus goes very slowly.

The DOS version apparently does not have audio for much of the text in the game.
Also, can you install mods?
No. Most mods depend on DirectX.

Fallout is among the last DOS games ever made, and among the very, very, very few to have more or less equal versions for DOS and Windows. (The Last Express, which appeared the same year, is another such example; I wouldn't be surprised to see Boxer-based Mac support from GOG in time.) 1997 was, as you can see, a transition year for the PC games industry from DOS to Windows.

What this means is that Fallout requires more CPU horsepower for Boxer/DOSbox to emulate than a game from 1985 or 1992, thus the slow menus.

Just downloaded Fallout 1 for Mac. New to the series and excited. Does anyone know where the save game files are located on Mac? I'm trying to keep the application file and all save data in Dropbox so that I can access the same saved game on my Mac laptop and Mac desktop. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated.

All Boxer-based GOG.com games' saves are at ~/Library/Application Support/Boxer/Gamebox States . "Reset Game Data" deletes individual games' directories here, meaning don't do this if you want to keep saves.

I have noticed the slower menus as well, but the game runs much better than when I had it installed with crossover. A couple of crashes here and there, but no big issues.

Same here, except with Wineskin. Wineskin (and Wine) are amazing, but for touchpad users like me many programs wrapped with Wine don't register taps as clicks properly; actually clicking the touchpad is needed. Sadly, Fallout is an example.

The GOG Boxer-based version registers taps fine (and in general handles the mouse much more smoothly), but the menus fade in and out so incredibly slowly as to be maddening. What a dilemma!
I don't have a folder for boxer in my App Support folder.
If you go to the fallout menu, there's an option to "export game data" that lets you export and import the savegames but I can't seem to edit them on my mac and the only windows computer I have are 64bit which don't seem to support any of the editiors. Am I SOL for editing my savegames?

thanks all,

JB
The Mac version used to work on OSX 10.6, but since the update to 10.7 tons of games like it stopped working :(. It's great that GoG has an OSX copy again :D! It's such an amazing game.
This game was incredible! Any word on a Mac release of Fallout 2? I'd love to play it.

Fallout 2 did not have a DOS release so unlike Fallout 1 GOG can't just set it up to run under Boxer and so they would need to run it under something like Wine/Wineskin which they don't seem to be doing right now so until they do I wouldn't hold my breath on Fallout 2 on the MAC
Is it possible to get rid of the timer on the mac version?

You must find the water chip and deliver it to your Vault. After that, there is no timer anymore.
