whenever i try and start the game as an administrator or normally it starts up then goes immediately to a blank black screen and stays there...there are no colour problems, no wiping and it goes away, its just a plain black screen and the computer then simply wont respond, not even to ctrl+alt+del. any ideas on how i can fix this? i have the updates and its works fine before, but for some reason is now acting up. and the administrator symbol is permanently attached to the desktop icon :s

Reinstall the game?
Update you drivers?
Use the DOS version with DOSBox instead?
as far as i am aware everything is up to date and compatible. i re-installed it and it got to the rocket ship flying around the earth in the Beginning video then just froze completely and i had to shut down the computer again like all the other times.
Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 95/98?

Where do you have the game installed? I remember reading that newer versions of Windows have UAC which may be causing some problems.

I think you can right-click the icon and go to properties to find the compatibility settings.

Is it installed in something like c:\program files (x86)\gog\fallout\ OR c:\fallout ?

It should work on Windows 7 (I don't have it, so I don't know for sure), but the game page says it is compatible.
