So I just downloaded Fallout 1, having never played it before, and after installing it, I launch the game. The usual paranoid message from Windows pops up asking me if I want it to make changes to my computer and I click yes. It goes back to the desktop, then black, presumably starting the game, and completely crashes. Esc button doesn't work, nor does ctrl, alt, delete, forcing me to turn my laptop off manually using the power button.

I tried reinstalling, but to no avail. Can anyone help me?

First, can you provide a little more information? What version of Windows are you using? What about the graphics card/driver? Have you tried running the game in compatibility mode?
Also, since your description of the process was so quick, I wonder if you installed the game in a predetermined path under the Program Files folder. I can't stress this enough: NEVER install a video game inside the Program Files directory, create a folder such as 'C:\GOG' and install your GOG games there, but NEVER install them under Program Files. So, please, go ahead and check that, if you did install the game in there, uninstall and make a clean install in any other folder not under the Program Files directory.

But, like zaine-h said, this is all speculation on my part, considering the information -- or lack thereof -- regarding your system and specs you gave us.
Thanks for getting back quickly, and sorry about the lack of information.

I'm using a Fujitsu Lifebook AH532
Windows 7 64-bit
8GB RAM
Intel core i3-2370M - 2.4GHz
Intel HD 4000 - 1695MB used of RAM

I tried compatibility mode on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (usually 3) but same problem.

Sorry if I'm missing anything, I'm not entirely used to dealing with game problems on PC. The only other problem has been with Fallout 3, but then I'm pretty sure it's a common occurrence on later OS.

Game installs directly to c:\ Gog Games.

To be honest, I'm not sure what is happening. Have you tried the Fallout FIXT patch? It has a number of unofficial bug fixing patches and restores content missing from the GOG/Steam/Trilogy disk versions (relative to US retail Fallout 1). If you are worried about a vanilla experience, you can use a fixes only download of FIXT.

Thanks for the link, this actually solved the problem! I have no idea what was happening, maybe a resolution glitch or something? But everything's fixed now :)
