Greetings, I've been getting into the original fallout which the GOG version is so much better than the steam one.

My problem is I'm trying to save a brotherhood initiate but after killing the guards securing him I can't get past the accursed door protecting him.

I have like 0 skills in lockpicking and as much as I'd like to explode the door with my 1 grenade or with bullets that doesn't seem to be a option.

Please tell me there is a way to get to him that doesn't involved waiting till my next level and putting all my skill points in lockpicking.

On a completely unrelated note, I put my skill points into Small guns, Science and Repair for a majority of points. Yet I rarely get to use my science or repair. Am I missing opportunities to use them or did I put my points in skills that are never used. Like swimming in Deus Ex.

Thanks for any aid that can be given

"There are very few personal problems that cannot be solved through a suitable application of high explosives."

Try Dynamite!

- get some dynamite
- stand next to the offending door
- set timer, if your explosive skill is low go for a high number like 3:00
- drop the dynamite from your inventory
- run away before you explode yourself

Blowing up locked doors is an effective way to bypass them if you don't care about stealth.

Thanks. I wondered about dynamite. Where do I buy some Dynamite? I remember finding some ages ago but I sold it.

I hope I don't come across a lot of locked doors. Not sure I can afford that much boom.
You can find some laying around in places like Vault 15 or the Khans base, which is probably one of those you found and sold. Gun and Ammo dealers will sometimes stock dynamite but you may have to visit a few different towns while waiting for them to restock. If you go into a store that has merchandise tables, like Killians', be sure to check each table individually as each table can have it's own inventory which is separate from the vendors inventory. Just use the hand icon as if you are looting the table and you will engage in trade with the vendor. You can get through the game without dynamite by using other skills, like lockpick or repair, but there are a lot of places to use dynamite.

Science is used on computers and there are some speech option at the end of the game that allow you to defeat the "final boss" without having to engage in combat. Repair has many uses from fixing old machinery to "fixing" certain barriers in order to pass them. So while some skills seem to get used more than others, like Small Guns, all of them have specific uses. There are some parts of Fallout 2 where you have insanely high skill checks to receive bonus items, like a companion who is pretty good but who gets way better with 130%+ in science.

Except Throwing.
Yes, I know you can use it with grenades, but Throwing suffers the worst traits and shares none of the best traits of any melee or ranged attack in the games. It requires a number of high stats to be practical, including Agility, Strength and Perception, it doesn't benefit from Slayer or Sniper (which, given the above, is just tragic), it's shorter on ammo than any other combat style, and requires a high critical hit rate since no thrown weapon could hope to pierce armor except by extraordinary luck.
Grenades are strong, but you have to aim for enemies, not spaces, limiting their usefulness more than you might think. Big Guns are more versatile and better.

Just ignore Throwing.
